Hakuna Sukari

I am using a website called Hakuna Sukari (http://www.hakunasukari.com/) to "compete" against others with my BS levels. Turns out it's so much fun that I have started to measure myself at least 2-3 times more per day than I used to, and also doing it at times that are not foreseen in my doctor's chart because the website gives me more options of how to classify readings. Hakuna Sukari means "no sugar" in Swahili, and I love the name because it's so easy… Continue

Panic Attack

I had my first real panic attack today. For the last month or so, in hindsight, I think I may have had quite a few. They would usually happen when I was low, or thought I was low, e.g. on the way home from work. I would start feeling dizzy, as if I was fainting, would measure my BG and find nothing wrong with it, and then it would pass. What I discovered this morning, when I had a real attack, is that the BG goes up at the time of the attack! So last week, when I felt dizzy and measured m… Continue

Cooking lessons all alone

I have spent most of today cooking. It's Sunday and I'm preparing the week... and also tried something new for a special lunch today: Cannellini bean salad with chicken breast. Took me only about an hour to throw together (plus overnight soaking plus 40 minutes cooking this morning) - nothing compared to the almost three hours I spent doing a vegetable stew. It turned out to be about 5 litres so I'll eat this for the weeks to come...

This is what I threw in: one huge onion, 3 carrots, 2 potatoe… Continue

Struggles around the table this week

I want to start recording what I am eating, more to keep track for myself than for others, but I'm sure one or the other funny story will come out of it, given that I don't know how to cook and have to learn. Now.

This week was full of trials, like the carrot and pumpkin stew on Saturday night (carrots mushy, pumpkin hard, too much butter) that I ate with a huge portion of carpaccio (fresh meat). The fact that I felt too sick to finish my carrots and pumpkin could have had any of the following… Continue

Ciao Uta.
Ciao.

P.S.

Hi Uta! I'm so glad that you found this community!

I see that you were diagnosed quite recently. How have you adjusted to the new lifestyle? Do you have a doctor there in Rome?

Uta! I was reading your blog you posted on Sunday, and you've got the comment area closed down - so I am going this route to say hello! I've done the same thing before where I made something too hot. The things we do to eat healthy. That reminds me, will go thaw out some fish for dinner tonight (I love fish - do you?). I steam a few pieces in a vegetable/herb/black olives mixture that taste out of this world and serve it with a crisp salad and some basmati rice. If I owned a little cafe, this would be one of my speciality meals, as it tastes so heavenly. If you are into fish, I can send on the recipe (low in fat). Just let me know!

Hi Uta: You are having an excellent honeymoon period! That is very good. Tight control means using fast acting insulin (for example, Novolog) to cover meals and long acting (for example, Lantus) to cover basal (or an insulin pump with just fast acting insulin). I am not a medical doctor, so I am just offering my thoughts rather than medical advice. Since you are having some lows, probably best not to be doing the fast acting insulin right now, but be prepared to go to that if it is needed (for example, if you start getting highs after meals). Even if you can use just a little Lantus, that preserves the beta cells and your honeymoon can last longer (years, in fact). This is really well documented by lots of researchers. I just attended a talk by Bruce Buckingham, M.D., a Stanford University endocrinologist, and he is doing studies and getting excellent results with tight control right at diagnosis. Best to you, Melitta

Me and D

I am a beginner when it comes to my body. I never thought that anything was wrong with me, nothing ever really hurt very much so I thought I must be doing fine. When I got diagnosed with Type 1.5 (LADA), after the shock etc., I started changing my lifestyle (it's a long process) and at the moment, it seems that for the first time in my life, I know how it feels to be healthy... ironically.

For that lifestyle change, I got some good ideas from "The Spectrum" by Dean Ornish but those were just the basics which I tried to apply creatively.

So - for the first time in my life, I am doing something that could be called exercise: I walk to work one or two mornings a week (1 hour). I am also doing something that could be called relaxation or meditation: I do yoga in a group twice a week. And I eat the way I always knew I was supposed to eat: organic food, mostly raw, wholegrain, water. I still don't know how to cook (I never have) but throwing together a salad doesn't seem like such a boring thing anymore.

The part that I most enjoy is actually *finding* the kind of food I consider healthy - the right wholegrain bread (100%), the organic vegetables, the occasional organic meat. It's the kind of "hunt" that gets me a lot more excited than clothes shopping!

My levels of everything have been steadily improving, so I figure right now I'm at the good end of my honeymoon phase. My fasting bloodsugar has gone down from 258 when I was diagnosed to about 70 most mornings, My A1C went from 11.2 to 7.6 in the first month and should be around 5 now (haven't go the last results yet). I take 3 units of Lantus at 11pm now, down from an inital 5 (first month), then 4 (second month). Plus 500mg Metformin at every meal. And I have started putting on weight again, after an exhilarating loss over the 6 months before diagnosis (I was truly happy at first, not knowing the reason...). I had to buy a new pair of jeans and it's the only one that doesn't fall down to my ankles when I run to catch the bus! My cholesterol levels were also really low, so I have made a real effort to eat fat. Sounds weird, doesn't it?

However,,, diabetes is what I have, not who I am, so here is "something else" about me: I like languages, books, organic food, Rome (I LOVE Rome), the Jesuits, public transportation, cappuccino, archeology, my job, un-dogmatic Catholicism, British English, social justice, psychology, migrants, the sea. (tbc)

Oh, and I loved this video! (found it on this page)
