Has there been anyone else who feels the name 'type 1 diabetes' is lacking in name? I did a quick search and found this article from last year:Wanted: A new name for type 1 diabetes:…Continue

So. My ear isn't infected with bacteria, you say. Well then what, pray tell, is festering in my ear canal as of late?
I just got a call today with lab results on the swab my doctor painfully retrieved from my flaky ear. The culprit is no other than bacteria's nemesis, fungus, who is no fun at all, might I add. With the anti-bacterial drops I've been diligently putting in my ear, yeast's competition has been wiped out making room for more yeast to establish dominance. It's actually…

Bacteria are awesome. They make delicious yogurt and cheese. They help me digest cellulose and other knick knacks kicking around in my colon. Heck, they even manufacture my very-vital insulin!! But they have recently colonized in my ear, and I am not happy.
Maybe I was bound to get swimmer's ear, seeing as I'm in the water an hour a day, going strong since January of last year. But I have tried to hard to keep an ear infection at bay. I use ear plugs to prevent water from going in my…

Whew!
It's so nice to FINALLY get back into a routine yesterday. The holidays are absolute chaos! I don't know how some of you manage, especially if you are on syringes! Kudos to you. MAN does it ever feel awesome to have a full night's sleep twice in a row, waking up with normal levels and being pretty stable throughout the day!
During the week of Christmas I drove up 7 hours north to spend time with family. My parents live in a very isolated community. It takes one hour to…

How kind of you to comment....
In greetings/birthdays....I try to get an image more or less associated with the person whom I am greeting....makes it that much more special :)
Since I didn't know where you live in Canada....I made it a Wintry scene as it's what (most of) Canada is experiencing in December....when I sent the greeting.
I know what it would mean to me if I were to receive the same.

Stoyan said… Hi Valerie,
Actually, no, we do not have any epidemiologists. We are not a scientific organization and we do not study diseases - instead we do research on how the organizations handle the money that is donated towards type 1 research. That is how we determine which ones are doing a good job in the search for a cure or not.
SuFu, Ph.D., MS1 said… Hey. As for med school, study, enjoy life, have activities outside of school and shadow doctors. Those are the big things that admissions committees look for. Some places really like research, others don't really care. All of them want to see that you've followed a variety of doctors around for multiple hours each. The other is to get a good MCAT score. I would advise you to take it before the new version of the test comes out in a few years. I'm on one of the advisory committees for that and I think the new test is going to be brutal.
Other than that, drop me a line with any other questions.
