Hi Vanessa: I love my Byetta. I have been on it since December I have also lost 23 lbs. since December. It will make you nauseous, especially if you don't eat in 60 minutes. I find that if I take it 30 mins before I eat, I eat less also. If you ...

Don't feel like you're in "sorry shape." Those are really good medicines. Byetta has been really helpful in weight loss. If you do what the doc says with those meds, you might feel like superwoman in a couple of weeks! Sounds like you're on the r...

Vanessa, it takes time to get down from 12 to 7. Don't expect to reach that goal in a week or two. Its not safe, it can do some damage to your eyes. With metformin, they have to increase your dose gradually so you don't get cramps and other nasty...

I am a newly diagnosed diabetic.. so new that they are unsure of which type i am. I have an appointment on Monday and they will do some more lab work to determine if i have type 1 or 2. I am 22 years old, just recently got married, no kids yet and im a senior in college. I come from a big family of diabetics, both my mom n dad are type 2 diabetics. I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and the dr. gave me metformin to take until they were able to determine which type i had. When she told me i was diabetic i started to cry, i grew up thinking you would get diabetes if you were way overweight... well i am chubby and could lose some weight but didnt think i was that bad. I was and still am a bit ashamed to admit i have this disease and kind of brushed it off, these past 3 months ive been in denial and havent checked my sugars & stopped taking my medication, i have been feeling so drained and exhausted and cant seem to do anything, my kidneys hurt and i just ignore it. I know im being stupid thats why i finally set up a new appointment. My parents both got on me to take care of myself but i didnt want to hear it. The other day i checked my blood sugar just for the hell of it and it was 404 !!!! i was really shocked.. and i knew then it was time to stop being stupid and take care of myself.

I met with my Nutritionist!

So today i had an appointment with my new nutritionist, Ive already tried to make changes to my diet as far as not eating out every day and bringing my lunch to work. I sat down with her and she told me to write down what ive been eating every day since ive made my changes.. So i did. Then she tells me shes going to teach me how to carb count. I have no idea what she means... so she started explaining it to me and the rule of 1serving = 15 grams of Carbs.
she gave a booklet and im suppost start… Continue

My 1st visit with my new Diabetes Specialist

So as some of you know, i was barely diagnosed with diabetes, the physician i seen before until recently was unsure of which type i was.The doctor i seen today determined im Type 2, I am 22 years old but have a history of diabetes in the family. So today i had an appointment with my new Doctor, which i really like he explained everything really well and everyone was really nice. I have been taking 500mg of metformin twice a day, but i would usually forget to take it at night. He tested me for my… Continue

hey vanessa!
well im glad you are able to be point in some direction for treatment.
i hope that changed in medications help also.

meeting with a nutritionist will definitely help, i think.
after i saw mine- she really made things easier for me.
learning how to carb count really made things wonderful.
i hope you learn lots of great info from your nutritionist.

you will get used to checking you levels multiple times a day.
it does seem a little pesky at first-
but honestly, the more you check the more control you will have.
youll just be able to look back at your numbers.
if you had good numbers at this time-
you can try to think back and think of what you did.
and vice versa with high numbers.
and once you start to figure these things out-
you may be able to start checking a little less.
i think for type two- they say check in the morning, before bed and before and after one meal?
im no endo- but my co worker said this is what his doc told him.

goodluck vanessa!
i know you can turn this whole thing around :)
im always around if you need someone to talk to.

any cool plans for the weekend?
take care

Hi Vanessa - you have already taken the first steps to finding support by joining this community - good for you! I have had diabetes for 16 years, and I have really had my ups and downs. It wasn't until I found the right doctor and decided to take diabetes management seriously that I also found how many people are affected by this disease. There are ways to get invovled no matter what your interest is. A great place to start would be to contact your local American Diabetes Association office and let them know you would like to be a general volunteer. They can usually add you to a roster and will contact you when there is a need for volunteers. From looking at the ADA website, I think the Riverside office uses San Diego as the main contact, so start by calling the ADA San Diego at: (619) 234-9897‎. You can check out some local events and see what you are most interested in too - just go to www.diabetes.org and click on "What's Happening Locally" and plug in your city. That should give you a good start. Being part of the local diabetes community will be a great resource and support system for you!

Hi Veronica:

I see you were just diagnosed with type 2. My "Diabetes Day" is 5/16/06. I am also taking 500mg of Metformin twice a day. I also take a very small dosage of Glipizide to help my pancrease produce more insulin. Feel free to ask me any questions about living with type 2, metformin, etc. Take care.

Vanessa, it is important that you go to a Registered Dietician, and not a nutritionist. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, but an RD has to be licensed and trained. My sister used to go to a nutritionist, and she gave her some very wacky advice.

We will be with you every step of the way. If you have to take shots, I know you don't believe me, but you get used to it pretty quickly. and the ones they have now are so small and thin, not like the old days. Make sure you use the sides of your fingers, not the fleshy pads where it hurts to test. Your fingers will toughen up a little too. hugs from marie.

Hey, Vanessa! Thank you for the friend add... they are always so nice to get. I hope you find out the answers you are looking for from your Doctor. When I was 12 (1984) my doctor had me on oral meds for a month before I was switched to insulin... 25 years later I am still taking it,lol.

Congrats on your wedding!

vanessa,
i hope you get your answers today!
i can assume that it is very frustrating not knowing what type you are
therefore not knowing how to go about treatment.
when i was dx'd with the D i had a thyroid issue as well
so while the docs talked about which to fix first
i was waiting in the wings.
so i can relate.
things can only get better from where they are now :)
hope everything goes well today- let me know.
hope to hear back, take care
