Hi Anastasija Welcome aboard!! I have to agree with the other posters on here. Having had type 1 for over 20 years, I have not let it DOMINATE my life and you must do the same. Routine is the key! Just to add insult to injury, my mum has just been...

It is a bit scary when you first are diagnosed but after a while you get a routine and figure out how to deal with things yourself. There really are very few things you can’t do with diabetes. Feel free to ask any questions that you have.

Guilt

My grandmother calls me every day and cries into the phone "Why you? Why not me? I wish I could have this illness instead of you".

My mother tells me how she is not enjoying anything anymore and keeps thinking about my health. She bought me a 10 days stay at a fancy diabetes clinic in Germany which was really expensive... She is booking an expensive summer holiday trip for me and my boyfriend just to make me happy.

And these two people are everything that I have as a family. And it seems to me… Continue

Diagnosed

The first time when I realised that something was wrong was when I was really thirsty one night.
So I went to the shop and bought a sixpack of Coke xD
I drank everything, felt really weird, could barely move and still was thirsty.
This went on for a week or so and got worse and worse.
I had to pee before my lectures, during my lectures and after my lectures and was always late...
Then I realised that all my jeans were getting bigger.
I told my grandmother about it and she told be to buy a glucos… Continue

Hey, i'm a newbie too. Well sort of, its been almost a year now! I just read your post about your family, they'll get used to it too. I think it affected my parents quite a bit more then they let on, but they get used to it in the end too! Hope you're well

Hi Anastasija , hope all is going well ,i just had my 3rd month since being dx a1c , it was 8.2 down from 12.3 Endo said heading in right direction but long way to go . So are you starting to get into a routine? I wish you well as i too am brand new at this. I found this comment by a TU member Clarence Haynes.I think it has to do with this huge learning curve thats just been thrown at us.

"If you beleive, you will achieve, and a man never finishes his apprentiship, class is never dismissed, and there is no graduation day."
By the way he's been dealing with this for 90 years!!!
take care and ktf as allways.

Glad to hear about your trip :) That will be great fun!

I have a diabetes bracelet that I wear... so if there was ever an emergency then people would know.

When I travel on an overseas flight, then I order a diabetes menu. It's not very low carb, but then at least the flight attendant knows that I have diabetes. Will you be traveling alone? If yes, it might be good to at least tell someone ... or write it on a paper and keep it with your ID. If there is an emergency (low blood sugar), then they will check for your ID and see the note.

I have NEVER needed something like this, it's just to be extra cautious.

Also, make sure that you have plenty of snacks with you in case that you go low on the plane!

Well, I dont know if you have ever played Nintendo Wii Fit, but it is the only way I can motivate myself to exercise!! I hate working out! But when I do exercise a bit, it brings my levels waaay down! I am concerned about the future... Before I was diagnosed my vision was getting blurry all the time. I think it really did affect my vision somewhat so I am seeing the eye doctor this Friday. I always get worried now when my feet get cold etc. How about you? have you noticed any changes yet?

Hi, Anastasija! Welcome to the TU I was dx in Jan and have found this site to be the best support group ever! The first thing I learned is these are caring people that are all going through the same or similar thing. So enjoy and explore

Before the trip to Nepal, you should definitely order one of these insulin pouches-- it's a reusable small purse that keeps your insulin cool! I love them and they have been great for traveling. One lasts for years...

Oh my gosh I know what you mean by not being able to change the dosage myself. Its hit or miss right now until i go see the diabetes educator on friday. The first week I was really high (I think 270 was the highest). Then the next week I was low ALL THE TIME.. i was constantly eating skittles and drinking soda to get me back up... I finally called the doctor in the middle of the week and told her to lower my dosage because i didnt want to get fat!! lol. So now I take 5u of Humalog at breakfat, 6u at lunch, 8 at dinner, then 18u of Lantus at night. My numbers have been really good so far.. But my doctor said that my pancreas may be in the "honeymoon" stage when it still produces a little bit of insulin. Its been really hard this week... My parents had a party and the guests left all these really yummy treats.. I shot myself up with 6u of insulin and went to town!!! However, I checked my levels like 5 hours later and it was 150... oops! I cant wait to be able to adjust to what I am eating... I feel like i HAVE to eat carbs so that i dont get shakey and low... How are your levels, etc???
