My latest A1c was 6.2. Not bad. It's higher then I'd like it but given the holidays and having been sick for the three weeks prior to my last blood draw I'll take it.

My cholesterol however is another story 269. Good lord! it went up 100 points since October. They've upped my Lipitor dose and maybe that will help. High cholesterol has been a constant battle for me since high school when it was first diagnosed. Heart disease runs in both sides of my family so time to nip…

crazy birds!

Posted on January 13, 2008 at 7:17am 2 Comments

There are geese flying north already! What's up with that? Crazy birds.

I handed out bread at the pond behind my home and counted carbs.

Sad for me. I still see every food item as a number, even if I'm not the one eating.

One small reason I'm glad I had the transplant

The past two days have been car maintenance days from hades. The roads here are full of potholes thanks to the nice thaw we been having and yesterday on the way to work we hit a giant crater. Thank the gods it was within walking distance of home because my partner, (we'll call her M) broke a bolt trying to loosen the nuts to put on the spare. Good times. Now mind you we both start work at 4:30am, so it was rainy, and dark and Michigan in January is just cold no matter how thawed… Continue

Medical ID - Do you wear one?

Posted on December 4, 2007 at 7:41pm 4 Comments

I ordered a new ID bracelet today from www.roadid.com. Anyone that knows me, knows I'm a big fan of their product. I first found them about five years ago when I was searching for medical ID bracelets that were customizable and yet didn't have metal parts that would touch my skin. I've been hooked ever since! They have a new interactive ID (same idea as medic alert) and of course I had to have one!

I'm a dork what can I say? ;)

I'm often befuddled by people that…

I heard that you got your transplant in Chico. I contacted the recruiting nurse yesterday. She sent me some paper work. How has your transplant worked? How many years have you had it? Are they trying new drugs to keep the islet cells working longer?

Hey there...I also had an islet cell transplant. Mine however was different than yours. I had Chronic Pancreatitis so they removed my pancreas and harvested MY islets and then put them in the portal vein of my liver. They have taken up residence in my liver and are doing pretty well. I have severe hypoglycemia unawareness, which is why I wear a CGMS.

I hope you are doing well!

My dad instilled in me a layman's love of reading history and it spills over into all aspects of my life, including diabetes. I very much appreciate your trips down the lanes of history! I have read much, of course, but it is even better to get it from someone who lived it. Thank you!.....Judith in Portland

I thought I received a message from you, but when I went to check there was nothing.

Can you write to me at manny at tudiabetes dot org with your choice for the prize?

I just emailed the folks in Chicago to see about the islet cell transplants. I'm VERY curious about it. I'd love to talk to you about it in detail. Would you mind emailing me at amyliagrace@yahoo.com?
Thank you!

I hadn't met anyone who had undergone Islet cell transplant before. It's now so common to see "shots" or "pump" for type 1's who join the site as answers to the question "type of treatment you use" that you could have passed "under the radar" as a prediabetic. :)

I am glad you found us, and I would like to welcome you to the growing TuDiabetes family!
