Awesome! Good luck with the CGM! You'll see how much it helps!

A few things about your basal, if your blood sugar has consistently been in the 200-250 range after breakfast than you did the right thing by tweaking your bolus. That means you basal rate is keeping your blood sugars consistent, it's just that your boluses are not bringing you BS down far enough post-meal. If you have incredibly inconsistent results that are high I would increase the basal rate until you have consistent results then dial in your boluses.

Another issues that may be causing your low BS at night is the fact that your basal rate may be to high at night, you may want to drop your basal rate form 9pm-12am to .4 and see if that keep you from going hypo at night and you may want to tweak your basal rates for dinner coverage to level out that time of day that seems to be most challenging for you.

It could very well be possible to have higher basal rates in the morning due to the "dawn phenomena". This is where people's blood sugars rise for a rather unexplained reason in the morning after sleeping through the night. Potentially due to the lack of activity and slowing of metabolism over night. Sorry, you're not crazy! lol

The beauty of the pump is the ability to eat whenever or even skip meals if a situation should arise. However, the caveat is that you can not just let your pump go if you need to change meal times. Sometimes you need to cut a % of your basal rate or bolus a little to help keep your sugars level. It's an art form!

Hope this helps!!!

Hi Zaira, I do my exercising during that time as well. Work...sheesh. I usually hit the road at 5 if I'm riding on the road or 5:30ish if I have to drive to the local MTB trails. I've gotten all the way down to 45% of my normal basal rate when I ride, I was going to low to often when I was at 60% and then 50%.

One thing to keep in mind is that exercise can affect your BS as long as 8 hours after exercising. I usually get it about 2 hours after working out.

Dropping to 50% definitely sounds like the way to go, however, make sure you jump back up to 100% in the last portion of your workout or right after otherwise you get the reverse affect and your BS will creep up and be 200 before you know it due to lack of insulin. It takes some dialing in to get it right and then all you have to do is factor in how intense you are working out, how long you are working out, when was the last time you ate, what your blood sugar is currently and...I think that's it...oh, no, what your current basal rate is. :) Simple right?

Here is what I do:
1. Set my basal rate at 45% on my way home, by the time I walk the dog, get myself ready to ride and get out the door my blood sugar has usually creeped up to the the upper 100's which is a good place to start
2. If I haven't eaten recently I'll have a granola bar and some Gatorade G2 (half the carbs of regular Gatorade) for a decent base.
3. I'll stop every 45 minutes to an hour to check my blood sugar and grab a snack, usually consisting of a PowerBar Gel (28g of carbs) of a PowerBar Triple Threat (28g as well) unless for some reason my BS is high which is an incredibly rare occurrence
4. Finish workout
5. Immediately reset basal rate to 100%
6. Check BS
7. If low, mix chocolate milk and drink
8. If high, mix chocolate milk, drink, take bolus
9. Cook and eat dinner covering as I normally would I try to eat soon enough to give my body an hour or two to settle before going to bed
10. Check BS before bed
11. If high bolus (minus half a unit to cover low blood sugar if i worked out that day) no workout = no removal of half a unit if BS is high)
12. If BS is low (70-90) I'll eat a granola bar or 15-18g of carbs
13. Lower = double up on the carbs
14. I'm usually good through the night here

Does doing all of this suck? Yes.
Is this the right plan for you? Probably not.
Is it a starting point for you to make your own plan? Hopefully! :)
is it better than getting a horrible nights sleep due to hypers or hypos? Yes!

I highly recommend if/when you get the chance to add on the CGM for your minimed. It helped me fine tune my basal rate, especially overnight.

What sort of exercising do you participate in? Sorry for the long reply.

Hope this helps!
-Mike
