About Me
My name is Erica, I hail from New York City and I've been diabetic for the past 9 years this month (October). I'm a college student at the moment with a double-major in Creative Writing and Digital Art & Design. I should be graduating in May.

My interests include: Dance (tap/jazz/ballet/belly), Acting, Role-Playing, Art History, Philosophy, Photography, Graphic Design, Web Design, Coding, Blogging, Rock & Roll, Reading, Writing, Calligraphy, Snowboarding, Traveling, Traipsing, and Dreaming.

Why I joined TuDiabetes
When I was 15 I read a memoir called "Needles," by Andie Dominick. If you have not read it, you should. Reading about Andie's story was both heart-breaking and inspiriting, and I wanted to see what more was out there, and came up empty-handed. There was one other memior I found (Sweet Invisible Body) but it is out of print. All the other books are medical books, or children's books. I did find one YA fiction book, Sweet Blood, but it wasn't accurate. Obviously the author didn't have a good-enough grasp of the condition to understand it fully. Thus, I decided that this wasn't right. There's so much literature out there about everything from cancer to rape to facing high school. Why is Diabetes so left out? I decided that I wouldn't rest until that was no longer the case. I decided that I would write my own book.

It would be fiction, as writing a memoir for me would be too difficult. The main character would be female, like myself, and would be of some high-school age. (The time I had the most difficulty with Diabetes.) I had all this decided, but so far I've spent the past 6 years writing and rewriting the first 3 chapters, unable to plot out the story. I almost gave up. Then my mom came up to me and expressed how important it was that I write it, how wide an audience I could possibly reach.

I realized that I can't do it alone, with just my story as a basis to jump off of, and I don't want to just make situations up. Every diabetic is different, and I want to hear and learn about other's stories so that I can better understand the way others feel about and live with Diabetes. Thus, I am here. I feel like this community will be a great inspiration to me, and I thank everyone in advance if you decide to share your stories with me.

Hi Erica

Thanks for the invite, otherwise I wouldn't have found you because I assumed it was spelled with a K. It was great meeting with you this evening in NY. I hope you had fun getting together with all of us.

We're going to have a meetup in Boston early July of next year, so please consider coming up and saying hello.

Hi Erica, thanks for your comment on my blog Sad about DKA. I am glad to hear that you go that extra step to protect yourself, my son wears his MedicalAlert bracelet everywhere, never takes it off (just to be sure he will not forget to put it back on).

I wrote Adamn's story because it saddened me and I don't want it to be in vain. I am glad that you brother survived from DKA. What I did not put into the blog, is that people were asking him if he took his insulin and he was saying yes, even if he was acting strange and was throwing up often, people thought nothing of it until he said that he did not remember if he did and collapsed into a coma. That was when they called an ambulance, but it was too late. He staid into a coma for 3 days...

Thanks again and good luck with your book ;)

Wow, that sounds like a busy day! Did you enjoy the summer here? It was my first summer in Chicago, I'm really glad I did it. Only I didn't get to do nearly as much as I wanted because first I wasn't feeling well, and then was diagnosed and spent some time back in WI to get adjusted... but still a good summer. I'd love to meet up if you're in town! Definitely let me know what your plans are :-)
