After I was diagnosed with D, I read Dr. Neal Barnard's book and adopted a vegan diet. My numbers improved dramatically and I felt great. I joined a gym and exercise 3 times a week for 1 hour to 1-1/2 hrs. I still do (but only 30 minutes a day. I've lost 40 lbs since 2007. My diet is not strictly vegan any more. I eat eggs and cheese (cholesterol is 190, trtiglycerides - 68) at "birthdays, wakes and weddings" I eat whatever is served including steak & cake, however I keep all portions small. In 1/2012 I was diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS). I declined surgery and take an aromatose inhibitor which (Jan 2013) has reduced the tumor 75%. My new doctor (an oncologist) is delighted and is no longer considering surgery. For this reason I do not eat any soy products. I also take metformin for ca, but of course it also helps the D. My protein comes mostly from veggies, cheese and eggs. My ca has always been without symptoms -same with treatment. Everything is under control & life is good

Welcome to the family! On this forum you will learn so much. Most of all you will learn that you are not alone. Everyone here is supportive and will provide answers to your questions. Search the site for answers. Read the discussions and blogs for information. There are videos to help you understand diabetes and its treatment. Most of all there is family to talk to and even to vent to, if needed. Welcome home.
