Progress Trumps Perfection commented on Brian's blog post 'Deciding not to have kids.'
"This is a tough topic, and totally a couple's personal decision with many factors involved. My medical team told me when I was 30 years old, that if I wanted to have kids, I needed to do it then. They maintained that adding the "over…"

"If you were having a good taper week you'd feel "off" as well for a few days. See you feel in a couple days. Lots of liquids. Critical to make sure BGs aren't out of whack the last couple days prior to the race. Good luck!"

Marathon while Sick?

I'm scheduled to run my second full marathon this Sunday. Up until this week, training went well, and I felt on course for a great shot at a big PR (shooting for a 4:10). I've come down with the only cold I've had this year...you guessed it...this week. I'm on day 4 of the cold and haven't run at all in the last 3 days. The marathon is 3 days from today. I'm pretty sure it's just your garden variety cold, but am now in the hacking up a lung phase. I'm 46 years old, type 1 for 20 years, and yes,…See More

Frustrated with the Labels

Posted on September 26, 2012 at 1:48pm 6 Comments

I had my 6 month endoc appointment last week. My A1C was 7.0. I usually hover closer to 6.5, but the 7.0 was not unexpected based on my meter lately. Doc briefly looked at the very recent history on my meters and let's just say it had been a bad night/morning. Mystery mexican meal not long before going to bed (135) resulting in a lousy midnight high (350), which I brought safely down to 112 by morning. Then out for my morning run, and dropped to 65 in the first couple miles, so gobbled a few…

Not Now!!!!

Posted on November 2, 2007 at 5:48am 1 Comment

I'm a pet sitter, and arrived a little early at a new client's home for our "meet and greet", so decided to sit in the car for a few minutes. I started to feel a little funky, so checked my blood sugar. It was 45! Lovely to think of going in to meet a new client sweating, shaking, and not thinking clearly. Just great. So I popped some glucose tabs and sport beans, and prayed that my BG would come up fast (10 minutes until I was supposed to meet with her). Wait, wait, wait.....test....65. Good… Continue

Pushing Limits

Posted on August 13, 2007 at 3:16pm 3 Comments

I ran 7 miles this morning! While this is not particularly remarkable in the grand scheme, to me it is because it is the longest I have ever run. It is also remarkable because I was able to hold my blood sugar nice and steady (140, 117, 117, 143) using a new carb source (sport beans) and a 50% basal rate. It was also great because I tried out my new Amphipod belt, which holds two 8 oz. water bottles, my glucose meter, test strips, lancing device, sport beans, $10 bill, and last but not least a… Continue

Embracing Technology

Posted on August 2, 2007 at 6:12am 1 Comment

So I've seen tudiabetes for a while now, and was reluctant to join. It looked cool, but I have a tendency to push back against all forms of new technology at first. Now that I'm here, I see that it's pretty easy, and lots of fun. Just people connecting with others based on the common bond of diabetes.

I loved Star Trek as a kid (OK, as an adult too), so you would think that I'd jump on the bandwagon more easily. As in: Why did I resist getting an insulin pump for so long? Why did it…

I do the Carlsbad Marathon every year, 4 years running, and it's always an amazing experience. Next year it's Jan. 22. This year I am also running the Denver R'n'R Marathon with Glucomotive (the Insulindependence running club). I'm hoping it will be similar. If it's half as much fun as Carlsbad, it will be great.
Congratulations on your success, and kudos for your desire to help others.
Best wishes,
Jerry

Hi,
Yes, I've been a Triabetes captain, and I have been, and always will be in some way, connected to Insulindependence. I just took a look at your blog, and it seems that, like me, you've been taking some time off from blogging.
In spite of the fact that I am currently a "Testing Limits" captain, I have been doing little or nothing lately to energize myself or other diabetics. Every time I hear from someone it gives me another little push to get going. So thanks for asking.
The main thing, though is just to get connected to other diabetics who are living active, athletic lives. You may also be interested in Team WILD. Triabetes is a larger community, but you don't have to pick one or the other.
I would recommend you go to some Insulindependence events and see what you think.
Let me know if you have any questions.

HI! Looking forward to meeting you face to face. It was so great to talk with Melissa - she has alot of the same thoughts and attitudes I've developed about various Diabetes related things. I'm sure you'll be in the same mind set from reading your notes!

Well, I've survived (?) a year as a T1. My weight is good, my health is good, my Alc- well, better, though not as good as I would desire - the learning curve you know!

I'm not sure I'm ready for a pump though you and Melissa both seem very pleased with yours. It might take me a little while to embrace that. Figure I've gotten used to the pens so we have some progress.

Nice to have a dog lover in my friends list! We have a 5 year old Golden that is such a sweetheart. Smart too!

Talk to you more later! -Carla

PTP,

Very curious about how your half-marathon went. Give us the scoop at the group message board - the ups and downs as it were.
