Hard to say Goodbye

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 9:31am 7 Comments

This past weekend was a sad time around our house. A very good friend of Jim and myself passed away on Saturday from uncontrolled Diabetes. Everyone who knew Stan, constantly was telling him to lose weight and watch his Blood Glucose. He was a type 2 diabetic for about 15 years. He used every excuse in the book to continue his poor eating choices. Which led to an amputated toe, triple by-pass surgery and kidney dialysis. His wife nagged, cajoled, begged and prayed for him to take care of…

Adventures in Hospitalland -Part 2

Posted on June 21, 2012 at 8:44am 5 Comments

While I was in the ER, medical personnel asked me many questions about the meds I took for my maladies. One of these people was a hospitalist ( a doc who works at a hospital, but has no outside practice.) When discussing insulin, she said I would be put on a sliding scale. I said NO I WON"T, the sliding scale is out-dated and an old way of dosing insulin. She looked at me confused and said how do you dose your insulin ? I said I count my carbs and dose according to how much food I will be…

Adventures in Hospitalland

Some of you may know that I was in the hospital last week for a case of cellulitis. I came home on Friday and am recovering. As we all know, hospitals are not good places for diabetics. My husband took me to the ER ( which my PCP doctor said to do.) Suspecting that I would be admitted for treatment of IV antibiotics, I took along with me my meter and my insulin vial and syringe. In the ER they confirmed that I had cellulitis and, yes I would be admitted. I told every medical professional…

A special lunch with a special guy

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 12:37pm 3 Comments

I just returned from a trip to California, primarily to visit with my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. My husband and I try to get there at least 2 times a year. This time in addition to the family, my husband, Jim and I also had the opportunity to have lunch with Manny Hernandez. For those of you who do not know, Manny is the founder and "fearless" leader of the Diabetes

Hand Foundation, of which TuDiabetes is the social network we all belong to. The DHF office is in Berkeley and Jim… Continue

Hey Cat. Thanks so much for stopping by.
I'm glad to know that your housing transition went well.
I don't recall doing anything this summer - it just went by so fast, although it's 80 today.
When Jane and Esther got home from China, Kona was so mad he ignored them for almost a week, walking around with his nose up in the air. They are going to be getting a dog within the next few weeks, probably from the shelter.
Here's the bad boy in one of his favorite places

and Esther at the panda sanctuary in China - don't the panda's look like they're on tranquilizers?

The weather has been wonderful. I drive down to the river, open up the car and sit for the longest times. It's so pleasant.

I'm doing well. Good to hear your doing better.

Have a good one.

Hi Cat, It is very nice to hear from you. I am really sorry that you are not feeling well. It is good that the cooler weather is here. At least you do not have the heat to worry about. I hope that you feel better soon. Are you able to get out around the new neighborhood for walking or ride your bike inside? I know it is really hard to do when you don't feel well.
Your old place sounds nice and sale ready. I hope that someone makes an offer soon and for the price that you want.
It is still warm and sunny here. There is a bit of fall in the air. Ammi is out on the porch right now. He likes to sleep out there on the deck. It is a change of pace for him. Zen is always in the bedroom with me except every morning she comes downstairs and we have a 'Tom and Jerry" moment when Zen dashes by the dog and they both go flying upstairs with the cat first running to get under the bed.
I have been stressed with health issues that look like they are never ending. I may have to have another surgery soon and when I was told that I got very upset.
Life has been difficult and I am trying to keep my mind on other things but it is hard. I can only take one day at a time, that is best for now. I do hope that you have a wonderful weekend, or what is left of it. Do you feel well enough to go out to eat?
Ellen

It is very pretty here. It is warm and not quite fall yet but the light is changing and getting very pretty. Sunset comes earlier.

I bet you are glad that your house is on the market. Good luck with selling. I hope it goes fast.
It has been raining today. We are waiting for it to stop so we can run out and pick the tomatoes. There are some ripe ones growing in a pot on the porch. I never thought they would turn but they surprised me. We have a big bowl full of cherry tomatoes and medium regular ones and they are really good. I don't feel to bad today. We went to a pain clinic in DC yesterday. They mentioned that the morphine is not good and quits working so I am getting ready to wean off it. I am not looking forward to it. I hope it is not too bad. I hope that the pain doesn't come back. We were gone most of the day so I am resting and taking a nap this afternoon. I get really tired when we go to the doctor.
I am glad that Zorro is settling in. I am dyeing my hair after a long time of doing nothing. It turned gray but not a nice color so I am dyeing it blonde again. It is supposed to be light so I have to keep it on a long time. I am not used to really short hair. I got sick of messing with it so I got it cut again. I miss the pony tails and doing stuff with it. I wonder if it will ever get long again. I always have trouble growing it out. Well, I guess I will try the tomatoes. The rain has stopped and all kinds of critters must be glad because they are all singing!

Hi Cat, I have been at the hospital doing a lot of tests. Something strange is going on. I have zero appetite and have developed a tremor. I had a HIDA nuclear test yesterday and was at the hospital ten hours. I really got sick. Today I am resting and then tomorrow go to the pain clinic.
I am really upset because they are trying to rule out things but keep finding things like the tumor that is not causing my symptoms. I am very frustrated. I hope it is not the morphine that is causing the problems because it is the only thing that keeps me out of pain for most of the time, just not the afternoons.
How is the new house? I bet you have a lot less stress in your life now. I hope you are enjoying everything but it is not good news about Zorro. Will he have a hard time eating? I guess you will have to feed him soft food. I hope that he feels better. Zen and Ammi are good, but they need their mom to get better!
We are having cool weather now. It is cloudy and sometimes rainy. Time to find the sweaters. I know a lot of people who love fall but are not too excited about winter and the cold weather. It is usually not to drastic here.
I found this video that I thought you would like.

Susan,

So glad to hear you are all established in your new apartment and you like it! Sounds like your kitty will adjust with time. It's still all new to her and I don't think cats adjust easily. The fact she's rubbing against your legs and ankles is good. It's the place that's making her shy not the people.

My health has been fine knock on wood. I still have the same hypo's 74 - 324 but have been living with it. I'm again thinking of getting an insulin pump. Just thinking since the Doctor won't have an appointment for awhile, she's on vacation.

I'm so glad for Ellen also, smoothing out her health situation. A tumor or her gall bladder doesn't sound as bad as one on her liver. Sorry she doesn't feel completely well though.

Take care of yourselves. It's still pretty hot here 99- 100 in the car. I'm staying in as much as possible. Enjoy your cool. I'm really looking forward to having some too. Although it may not come anytime soon.

Cathy
