Hard to say Goodbye

Posted on November 20, 2012 at 9:31am 7 Comments

This past weekend was a sad time around our house. A very good friend of Jim and myself passed away on Saturday from uncontrolled Diabetes. Everyone who knew Stan, constantly was telling him to lose weight and watch his Blood Glucose. He was a type 2 diabetic for about 15 years. He used every excuse in the book to continue his poor eating choices. Which led to an amputated toe, triple by-pass surgery and kidney dialysis. His wife nagged, cajoled, begged and prayed for him to take care of…

Adventures in Hospitalland -Part 2

Posted on June 21, 2012 at 8:44am 5 Comments

While I was in the ER, medical personnel asked me many questions about the meds I took for my maladies. One of these people was a hospitalist ( a doc who works at a hospital, but has no outside practice.) When discussing insulin, she said I would be put on a sliding scale. I said NO I WON"T, the sliding scale is out-dated and an old way of dosing insulin. She looked at me confused and said how do you dose your insulin ? I said I count my carbs and dose according to how much food I will be…

Some of you may know that I was in the hospital last week for a case of cellulitis. I came home on Friday and am recovering. As we all know, hospitals are not good places for diabetics. My husband took me to the ER ( which my PCP doctor said to do.) Suspecting that I would be admitted for treatment of IV antibiotics, I took along with me my meter and my insulin vial and syringe. In the ER they confirmed that I had cellulitis and, yes I would be admitted. I told every medical professional…

A special lunch with a special guy

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 12:37pm 3 Comments

I just returned from a trip to California, primarily to visit with my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. My husband and I try to get there at least 2 times a year. This time in addition to the family, my husband, Jim and I also had the opportunity to have lunch with Manny Hernandez. For those of you who do not know, Manny is the founder and "fearless" leader of the Diabetes

Hand Foundation, of which TuDiabetes is the social network we all belong to. The DHF office is in Berkeley and Jim… Continue

Hi there,

Just put up the Christmas tree and the lights. I am not doing much if anything outside in the front yard this year unless I get totally inspired. I am so happy to see Zen and Ammi again. Zen is right next to me cuddling. I am so happy for you for selling your house to the nice family. I bet you feel good about that!
How is your cat doing? How is the new place? All settled in now? Do you have snow at all? It is cold outside when I leave in the morning. I wish it would snow for Christmas but that is unlikely here in VA.
How is your husband enjoying things with the move? I hope you are feeling better since the last time you wrote you were not feeling that well. Having multiple chronic illnesses and surgery is not easy. I hope you are okay.
I am trying to clean my room and I am ending up making a big mess. Every time I clean it gets worse before it gets better. Our New Year's Resolution is to have a very clean and organized house and I am really going to try hard to get things together here. We already power washed the deck and it looks like new. We are painting the stairs in front and that is a big bunch of stairs. My garden is over. I tried to bring in all the potted herbs but all the plants died while I was gone. I guess the guys didn't notice them. Jesse my son is working 70 hours a week. Chris is busy too. My aloe and a couple other's survived and I can use some of the dried herbs. I am not getting Christmas plants this year for the animal's safety. I am wondering what the cat will do in the tree. The dog will probably not bother it, but then again, he is usually the one that is always in trouble! Hope to hear from you soon. Take care. Ellen

hi cat, yeah it was really great meeting Brian. We'd talked on the phone and also we've had a few "google hangouts", which is like a group Skype thing, so I knew his voice well already (he has a super kind & caring way about him). he said he would come over to my mom's "around lunchtime" and my mother said WHAT TIME, and he replied 12:03, which I thought was so funny. then he arrived at exactly 12:03. ed is also completely punctual, so that was a good start. we ate a long lunch in the dining room at Goodwin House, talked about a variety of things, haha, including diabetes, can you imagine? my mother was captivated by him, he has such a delightful personality. we are very lucky to have him as lead admin.

I've been trying to keep up with everyone, but you know how it goes. Hope you are enjoying your holidays too. We are going over to one of Ed's co-workers for Christmas dinner, we have been doing a few things with them this year, nice family.

Hi there, Remember me? I was in the hospital again for a month. What a mess. The abdominal pain got really bad and I could hardly eat anything for a month at home, which really made everything worse. I lost 18 pounds and was really in so much pain with puritis which happens with these gall bladder flares I was hysterical. I first went by ambulance to the ER here and they gave me injections of several medications that stopped the pain long enough to get over to the VA ER in DC. They admitted me again..
I had several MRIs saw endo, liver, gastro, psychiatry, pain, and the first five days I was on so many medications that I slept straight through. When I started eating the food was really great, four times a day so I gained some strength and a bit of weight.
I was discharged two days ago but have so many appointments to go to again and I am starting a program several days a week there in DC at the hospital as well. I pretty much know that the things I have will not go away and that I will need to take a lot of medication for the rest of my life and deal with the chronic pain.
They found the same kind of liver tumor that I had removed at Georgetown and the first liver specialist told me I needed surgery. I totally freaked out because I never really got over the first one. I met the lead liver specialist and end up having some kind of problem with my liver growing benign tumors and being a fatty liver as a complication of diabetes probably who knows. I can't digest fat, so just like sugar, it says in my blood. I hardly eat any fat at all but before the hospital anything I ate made me sick and gave me this terrible itching inside my whole body that was worse than any pain I have ever felt.
They decided no liver surgery because of possible complications and gave me several medications that stop my symptoms to a tolerable level, no surgery for my GB but since the pancreas also causes these symptoms too still more tests though. They found a cyst on my kidney and my neck is damaged enough from stenosis that the nerves all the way down my arms and in my hands are affected, Neurosurgeon for this. I had a really wonderful psychiatrist and he convinced me that things would go better if I took some antidepressants and a very high dose of Valium in the hospital and for the rest of the week. I am referred to balance therapy and pain therapy as well because I can walk normally but not in a straight line, and I run into everything or just all of a sudden I start falling into the wall or the furniture. I have a tremor that even that even the valium won't stop in my hands. My Diabetes was 300-500 the first week but they worked hard and I was in the 100s eventually. I love the VA. The treatment was excellent and the people were extremely positive. I came out feeling much better, more positive, have more strength and am looking forward to the program and therapies. I really didn't want to deal with all these medications, but at least I am not on morphine anymore which was hideous. It really did not agree with me at all.
Now in VA it is cold for this area, but no snow and sunny. Both Ammi and Zen missed me and I really missed them so much. While I was gone they became friends and lay on the bed or floor together within a few feet of one another. My son started an additional job so he is working a lot of hours now.
How are you enjoying your new place? Have you gotten some of the details set, like the little things that make a house a home? What have you been up to for the time I have been gone? I am attempting now to get out all of my winter clothes and out the summer ones put away and get the house ready for Christmas. I did some stuff the day before yesterday, but I felt exhausted and sick the next day so I know to go slower. So many things to do.
I hope that kitty is doing well at your home as well as your husband. I am glad to be back Online. I am getting involved in FB via Wendy here and enjoy it bu

hi Cat, sounds like you made the move at exactly the right time. We got a lot of snow on Wednesday, I did about 5 BigBlueTests during the day trying to keep up with it. it's a lot of work, especially when it's so wet. Then the power went out at 2 PM for 7 hours. we were huddled around the wood stove with no TV, of course, gee whiz, we had to talk about stuff. haha. I wish we had bought a generator.

I'm sorry to hear the PD is getting to you. I don't understand why we must suffer. big big hugs!

Susan ,

It has gotten cold here in the 20's and 30's. I call that cold. It hasn't set me back any however. The heat here at my condo is good and I always were a good coat out and sit in the heat in the car. It's drying out my skin, but then again it is winter. The cats don't seem to be affected by the cold.

So sorry to hear you are having hard times. Sleep is valuable and loosing sleep is not fun. I sleep with my mouth open, I can't help it. So I don't always sleep too well either. I'm sure that is different than your case. Last night I even tried one of those "breathe" right strips on my nose, but it didn't work.

Sorry your meds aren't working. Is there anything can be done about that?

I hope next time I hear from you things will be looking up and your situation is better soon. If there is anything I can do to help don't hesitate to say so.

Cathy
