I find "are you diabetic?" a rather limiting question, especially when I could label myself as a: designer, artist, painter, poet, teacher, animal fan, writer, yoga student, sister, aunt, daughter, graduate student, biker, skater, world traveler, gardener, knitter, musician, philosopher, very occasional comedian, dreamer, pescitarian (veggie with fish) mobile-maker, etc, happily married women who ALSO happens to have diabetes - these, plus living with diabetes, make for a far more apt description of me. Growing baby

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to keep you all posted that I'm moving right along in my first pregnancy - I'm almost 21 weeks now. I announced the news to my family this past week and they are very happy to hear the news. The surprise reveal after a day of traveling on planes across the country went very well. My parent's took us out to dinner when we landed, to celebrate my birthday. After we ate, I gave my mom a belated mother's day gift. She's a big reader and is coming to New Zealand with us in t… Continue

The BIG NEWS is being leaked!

This is an exciting moment...drum roll please...my husband and I are having a BABY!! Yes, I am 12 weeks pregnant and finally feel confident in the tenacity of my new little spud that I'm willing to share it with all of you! (Just don't tell my mom or dad yet, we'll be telling them in person when we see them in May - I want to save them a few months of worry about my health). See our 12-week ultrasound scan in my slideshow above. So cute! Baby was shrugging, stretching, jumping about in there, fi… Continue

BREAKING CGMS NEWS!! Tenacity WINS!! DECISION OVERTURNED!!

My 13 month-long fight with my insurance company has taken a beautiful turn for the better. The third level of my appeal process was sent to an independent review organization (IRO) last month. The list of items sent included 39 documents, ranging from my bg charts, endo's prescription and letter of medical necessity, academic articles and all the previous correspondences I've had with Regence.

I received a letter from the IRO yesterday saying, "It is the recommendation of this reviewer that th… Continue

update update update (my CGMS appeal, again - still)

Jenny was kind enough to remind me that my last blog was nearly a year ago. Yikes. Talk about not actually writing a blog! Indeed, it's true when I say that I've been busy with graduate school and yes, appeals. I am all over the appeal process like the summer sun on the garden bed. Regence BCBS may have thought the summer of my request would never arrive, that the cold dark winter of denying me a CGMS was their forever-season. But the seasons always turn, don't they?

But today!! Today I mailed… Continue

not yet, appeal time

Well, the letter arrived from Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield. They've decided to deny my appeal for a pre-authorization for my CGMS. My case rep sent along all sorts of pages explaining, in their words, that any use over 3 days of the CGMS is considered still investigational. Aargh, I'm understandably bummed. Now I need to fill out the 2nd appeal. Three days does indeed give you abit of a pattern-albeit not very consistent, so why wouldn't 10 or 20? Are they just behind the times? Do they really… Continue

Hope that you have a great trip! I imagine it will be overwhelming to pack and get ready, but it sounds like a wonderful adventure! Keep us posted on how you are doing when you can!

Mine was almost full term, I kept begging them to let me have him sooner as I knew he was huge and I had extra amniotic fluid but they wouldn't. I was 39 weeks, 2 days. I am enjoying every second of him, he's so much easier than my first was. :) My first is only 16 months old, though so I'm definitely busy.

Congrats on your new baby girl! I had to comment because my second baby boy was born Sept. 17, weighed 9lbs, 12 oz, and was 21.5 inches long. :) They are so amazing.

Michael and I are thrilled to announce the birth of our darling daughter, Freya Mackenzie, born at 4:27 am on the 16th of September. She thrived through my last 5 weeks of pregnancy tinged with mild-preeclampsia, weighing in at 9lbs 12 oz & 21.5 inches long. My A1C was 6.3 & < throughout, ending at 5.7. My new family is thoroughly enjoying our 'babymooning' period. I am recovering slowly but steadily and expect that I'll be 'good as new' in just a short while. My body seems to be good at healing :D. Thanks for all your support, my virtual friends!

I had pre-eclampsia with my 1st and 3rd. Not fun at all, but you're nearly to the finish line! Hang in there and I can't wait to see who joins your family. Another strong and motivated woman thumbs her nose at diabetes!

Congrats on your little "bun in the oven"!!! I wish I could join up to the the Diabetes Age 4 group (you are so young) - but alas - I was abit older - so I'll wait until my age group starts up. I was telling Danny below that I met a little 4 year old girl this month at a JDRF convention here in MOntreal - and she became diabetic at 2 months old!! She was the cutest little thing - and is going on a green Animas 2020 in a months time. I was showing her mine (it has a few stickers on it).
