Hi Ashley! I'm third generation type 1, but I was also adopted as diabetes was a factor in the death of my birth mother, her brother, and my grandmother. My biological sister has no issues as far as diabetes but she does have problems with hypogly...

If you find one, let me know! I love pizza but find myself just eating the toppings and not the dough, which is unfortunate. I think that thin crust is supposed to be better on the carbs.

Distress and diabetes

So it's the holiday season. Life is supposed to exploding with happiness and good cheer but this year is turning out to be one of the worst holidays I've had. Family problems--a possible divorce in the family, job insecurity, relationship woes are taking a toll on my diabetes control. In times of distress, I know that people have their weaknesses. Unfortunately, my weakness is comfort food. The first thing I want to do when something bad happens is scarf down some carbs. But living with Type 1 d… Continue

Alcohol

Okay,

The topic I've been wanting to address but have been afraid to do so. I worked pretty late tonight and caught up with some friends for drinks. Drinks never include beer for me. My body can't handle the carbs, and I'm not about to prick myself before and after at a bar. So I stick with Vodka Tonics but always feel guilty for drinking. How many diabetics drink and just how bad is it for you? I had one and a half of a drink but I can't help but feel like I'm hurting myself.

I wanted to drin… Continue

Mornings

Mornings are the worst for having diabetes. Because I'm a runner and my schedule's pretty much non stop until the end of the day, I eat a lot at night. That's not to say I skip meals or anything like that but I can't seem to curb my carb cravings. I love cereal, and this is my brain food. But when I eat it at night, it raises my blood sugar level, and I"m usually high in the mornings.

Which makes it almost impossible to get up.

Are there any cereals that are yummy and good for… Continue

Hey Ashley! I'm a t1 and come from a family of t1's. My father was a t1, and 3 of his six children were or are t1's. Also, my nephew is a t1, two of my fathers sisters were t1's, and a cousin is a t1. My mother developed t2 6 months ago, all 113 lbs of her! Also- one of her grandparents had diabetes- not sure if it was 1 or 2. Diabetes and being a Kunik seem to go hand in hand!
I write a Diabetes Blog,
target="_blank">

Feel free to check it out! Also re: Pizza, thin crust is the way to go - so much easier to bolus for!

Hi Ashley

If you're having those kinds of problems see whether Symlin would help you. It takes some getting used to but it really helps with reducing post-meal highs.
