WHAT'S ALL THIS, THEN.

Getting around to joining TuDiabetes has been a long journey. I've dealt with this thing mostly alone (save my immediate family and friends -- wonderful support, but it's tough being the only diabetic in the crowd!) for nearly 23 years, and mostly by ignoring the crushing anger and helplessness that flare up from time to time. I tend to deal with everything else in life head-on, so this inconsistency has always bothered me. Until recently, I wasn't sure what to do about it. Anyway, here I am, ready. I think.

Things I Love:
Being married to The Best Man On Earth. Being mama to Luke. Love, enthusiasm and bravery. Writing. Travel. Singing, playing and listening to music. Film. Linguistics. Coffee, chocolate and gin. Language. Interior design. Color, typeface and whimsy.

Favorite Music:
Nick Cave, Neil Finn, David Bowie, The National, The Arcade Fire, Cole Porter, Beethoven, Mozart, Leonard Cohen, Pulp, Split Enz, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash.

Favorite Books:
Pattern Recognition (William Gibson), Endurance (Alfred Lansing), The English Patient (Michael Ondaatje), Invisible Cities (Italo Calvino), Einstein's Dreams (Alan Lightman)Elimination Dance (Michael Ondaatje), The Tipping Point (Malcolm Gladwell), The Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis), A Little Princess (Frances Hodgson Burnett), Our Hearts Were Young and Gay (Cornelia Otis Skinner), The Bible.

Favorite Films:
In My Father's Den; The Age of Innocence; Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; Amelie; Lost In Translation; It Happened One Night; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; Brazil; Labyrinth; Dear Frankie; Young Frankenstein

And That Television Thing:
House. That's it. I love me some House.

Uncharted Waters

It's overwhelming, a little bit. Okay, a lot. After all this time alone, here is this universe of people who know almost exactly what I go through every day. The mundane things, the bizarre things I've never asked anyone about. I think about diabetes nearly every second of the day--there is a constant algorithm happening in my mind at all times--so it seems strange that after only a couple of days posting here I should have this strange reaction. It's embarrassing, but I feel as though this part… Continue

well, I just read The Tipping Point, love Johnny and June, David Bowie, It Happened One Night. Love good, excellent writing - my best friend is a writer, and we're always talking about words and grammar. You've got me thinking about my favorites. Bruce Springsteen would be on my list.

hey, love your favorite books and movies!. I was just thinking of Dr. Charles - wow, he had a great team working with him too. He was a tad eccentric, like he had a long (really long) grey ponytail and drove a red Ferrari. One of the smartest persons I've ever met! I've always thought it was a good thing to go to an endo who does research and teaches at a good medical school, because they keeep on top of the latest stuff. good luck! keep in touch
