Thyroid Zombies

We are the thyroid zombies,

The walking dead,

The barely hanging on.

And still yet other pills to fix the problems

The others pills brought on.

I just received the new Minimed pump. It now asks stupid questions to remind me to do things I instinctively do because I have been pumping so long. After I prime the tubing, it asks me, "Do you see drops at the end of the tubing?"

I usually yell at it, "You think I would have stopped priming if I didn't?"

I wish I knew how to hack into its software and program it to ask more relevant and helpful questions. Maybe questions Stewart Smalley would have been proud of.

"Did you…

Solitary COnfinement- Day 4

Posted on February 12, 2012 at 9:30am 2 Comments

Today I hit a wall. A writing wall. It was probably because I spent the last seventy-two hours in front of a computer. I thought with all this time off I could accomplish great feats of writing, maybe even finish a book. But instead I have accomplished very little on the book front. I have left far too many status updates on Facebook and read far too many articles and books and blogs and theology (though I could never get too much theology.) I even read a, I think they call them, Paranormal…

Solitary Confinement- Day 2

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 9:30am 0 Comments

What a completely different experience than yesterday. I woke up feeling hungover. I don't think my body handled the twelve hours of hyper that was my day yesterday. I was dragging all morning until I passed out for two hours. After that I felt a little more human. But the solitary confinement is starting to wear on me. I realized today the reason I love to have eight hours a day to write all alone is because I come home to an amazing family. Now that I can't hang out on the couch with the…

Solitary Confinement Day 1

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 9:30am 3 Comments

My day started at five am so that I could get one last meal in before six hours of fasting in preparation for my thyroid ablation today. I was back in bed by five fifteen after yet another bowl of oatmeal and plate of egg whites- some of the only foods I could find that are easy to prepare, somewhat appetizing, and on the low-iodine diet I've had to be on since the first of the year- but since I have been off the anti-thyroid meds for five days, there was no chance I'd be able to go back to…

The pic you see in my album is indeed my Fat Cat (Catalina - 25') - named after my diabetic cat. We actually have this boat for sail - it's on a cradle that's can be put on a flatbed - so it's yours for the right price! The new boat like I said below is still in Marblehead, it's a 30', not sure if I'll ever get used to the wheel, am a tiller babe, can feel what's happening with the boat better, but I'll get used to it. I'd say if I lived closer, I'd come and crew for you on your sail! And yes, if you are sailing alone (maybe I misread what you wrote on my page - so I may be back to correct) - it's hard to find a boat to charter. Most places don't allow you to charter at night - and that's too bad - as night time sailing is awesome - with the stars, etc. That's one thing I want to take a course on next is celestial navigation - it's kinda old fashioned - but if my GPS chart plotter goes off line - and my paper charts get blown into the sea (trust me - it's happened once - and we managed to save it - hubby hanging over in choppy waters / high winds - while I swung the boat around to retrieve the $30 chart (heck - they aren't cheap!).
Anyway, hope you get your thyroid sorted out, that's one thing I keep on getting checked for a) my Mum had hers removed around the same time I was diagnosed back in '68; b) it runs in the family; c) often occurs to us diabetics. So far, I've been hit with just about everything possible, but I'm a survivor. Gritting my teeth with my parrot on my shoulder!

So,how was your sail from Marathon to Key West? We were just there a few weeks ago, went for a sail in a tall ship, was abit boring, as I'm using to working on a boat, not being a passenger. I currently own two sailboats - an '85 Catalina 25 (for sale - sigh - love that boat - but can't own two - right???) and just picked up a beauty in Marblehead, MA - another Catalina but 30' and one year older then our '85 but in pristine condition (it looks like it never sailed far). We hope to take her coastal sailing to Caribbean one day - but her resting port will be along the shores of Lake Ontario (in Ontario, Canada). Here's to reading your adventures on the high seas! I hate being on land during the winter!!

I was planning on taking two days down and two days back. with most of the mileage being in the second and third day. Am i being too ambitious by trying to cover 30 miles in a day? especially upwind?
I've been studying the charts of that area for a while now, trying to get familiar with all the ins and outs (as much as you can without actually being there)
is going to key west in one day an option and then spending 3 beating back up?
thanks for the thoughts on refrigerating insulin. its so hot i think i might have forgotten that one and been in trouble.
there is a vhf, i don't know about an extra. and i will ask about the anchor, i am chartering a boat from marathon so i suppose it will have the right stuff, but i should make sure.

Erin,

Sounds like a great adventure! I did a quick look @ the charts and it looks like about 50 nm from Marathon to Key West. I am sure you will get good advice on navigating this area.

Do you think you will be able to sail from Marathon to Key West in one day? It looks like it should mostly be a downwind sail. Coming back though might be a different story since you will likely have more of a beat (upwind) with lots of tacking.

I would definitely pre-plan a couple of spots along the way where I could slip in and anchor while the light is still high enough to see the reefs (aka no later than 3PM).

What sort of anchor will the boat have? Will you have a spare VHF?

From a D-perspective, the only thing I might add is I use my daytime basal rates when I am sailing overnight. Of course, I know you will have plenty of spare D-stuff on hand, right? On TabbyCat, I keep my insulin in a plastic container in the fridge where it can't freeze.

Fair Winds,
Mike

Erin,

Thanks for the friend add. I will be glad to answer any ??? you might have on living on a boat with diabetes.

Of course, I will have some questions of my own, like: When are you going? What kind of boat? How long will your trip be? What sort of back-up plan do you have? etc.

Fair Winds,
Mike
