Natalie ._c- said… - I am totally open about my diabetes, and as a result, people often tell me they have diabetes, too. They're usually Type 2, and if they're open, I talk to them about it a bit. What appalls me is the overwhelming ignorance they show. I'm not blaming the professional community for that -- there are not enough CDEs to go around, and most Type 2's are treated by internists and PCP's who really don't know any more than to prescribe drugs, but can't deal with all the ramifications of really controlling diabetes. Which can be very hard for Type 2's, simply because they have to be VERY self-disciplined since they can't just take a bolus of insulin to bring down a high BG -- they have to prevent it. Or wait it out for hours until their sluggish pancreata can bring it down.
There is SO much metabolically wrong with Type 2's that scientists don't yet have much of an understanding of all the problems, although they're getting there. That means that they come up with new drugs, but some of them are later found to be dangerous, like Avandia, and possibly Actos. I'm not going to go into all the details, but if I can help Type 2's understand more about how to take care of themselves, and what is going on, I will do that, whenever and wherever I can. Maybe eventually the AADE will come up with a "certified" peer mentor program, but until they do, I do what I can on my own time and terms. Far from adequate, I know, but every drop in the bucket helps fill it up! :-)

- Hello, Mr. Greenclouds! :-) (Love the visual image) I have had the same kinds of experiences in "support" groups as you have. The first group I went to was pretty much all retired Type 2's, and I was a 45-year-old working Type 1.5, but didn't know it at the time. It was totally CDE centered -- she would take turns asking each person how they felt, and they would respond to her -- there was no interaction between us. And I couldn't relate to them, because there was nothing to relate to -- HER fault, not theirs.
The second group I joined was a pumpers' group at a different hospital -- the CDE just sits there and lets us talk, but does add in her 2c when she has something to say. We trade tips and frustrations and successes, and stuff we've read, and how things are working out for us. It's very emotionally supportive.
It's hard to get professionals to consent to treating us as knowledgeable in our own right. At the AADE meeting last month, I roomed with the CDE from our pump group, and she said it was educational for her to "live" with a diabetic for a few days, because she really got to see what I go through. It's a whole lot different learning about it from books than actually living with it.

- The professional community is no more than lukewarm, as a whole, to the idea of peer mentor -- some people welcome it, but many don't trust us. It's like, if we don't have a string of letters behind our names, we must not know anything! I do think there needs to be a partnership with them, because knowing what is ethically right or wrong to say is important (for example, I'm careful not to diagnose, even if I think I know what's wrong, but I will say "you might talk to your doc about such and such), but I have asked people to get help any number of times when they came to me FIRST. So glad to have your support, because this is something I'm advocating for!
