Thank you to the welcoming commitee! I joined the site to obtain as much info as I can because I have a teenage daughter who is type 1 since the age of six! She's been on the pump for the last three years and it is not going well. Her doc took her off because she does not follow the directions. Her Mother and I are constantly at odds with her. We all went through the training and know how to operate set up the pump. We can not trust her to do it right. The doc cant believe the readings he sees. We are very frustrated so any info or advice would help. She just started high school and is in those"teen" years! She's active in sports and tries to eat right but loves to snack. This is where she hides numbers and bolis etc.. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks again for the warm welcome, I hope to stay in touch with many of you. I'm still new to the site and chat lines etc.. so please be patient as I try to navigate around!
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,
I can relate to your daughter. I was diagnosed at 10 and I went through some stuff in my teens. It is very hard to be different from your friends. Just be patient with her...she will come around.

Well let's hope things settle for her now. How old is she? I have to say I work with teens regularly and just general life is hard for some of them so I think as a parent we have to be proud of them just keeping a grip, allowing them as much relief from it as possible and then they get back to it. I'm really quite proud of Jay as it is soooooo frustrating sometimes and I'm not even being made a pin cushion of. We have to do what every parent does and encourage them to do the right thing with slightly....ok more difficult circumstances. I find the knack is to get them to think they made the choice without any guidance and how proud you are. Then all of a sudden that happens and you faint. Keep me posted!

Hi Kevin, My son is Type1 and never had any control, although not due to us trying, but I have to say with going through hormone changes and having to inject up to 11 times a day he is not wanting to write bloods he forgets and I spend all day chasing him with needles poor kid. We get by and how can I blame him. We are all fed up. It becomes draining for the whole family and I just wish we could switch it off for a day so I gread to think how our kids feel! We logically know this and Know we just have to get on with it but the other week Jay got so fed up he said I just want to ignore it today! I think this is what the kids think and who can blame them! I let him ignore it and chase him round doing it all and make him laugh. He soo gets fed up with mum doing it and takes back over. Jay is due to get a pump and I do worry I will be in the very same place you are in 6 months.

Welcome to TuDiabetes Kevin! Glad that you are here! I hope that this community can be of help to you and your family! We know how hard diabetes is on the whole family. Perhaps you can convince your daughter to join. We have an awesome group of teens on this site, some with GREAT control! Perhaps they could help her?? Check out this group for type 1 teens. Also there is a group for parents of kids with type 1.

Check out this guide for new members. It has lots of tips about finding your way around this community!

When you get a chance, add a photo of yourself or something related to you-- it helps us recognize you in discussions!

Hey Kevin. Feel free to ask me anything. I would be glad to help. This community has so much to offer as far as information. I know my teen years were tough also. I did get it together eventually but i think that is sadly very normal for most diabetics to have a tough time during the teen years.
