An Amateur Mistake

Last night I tested before dinner and was 121. Two hours after an unexceptional meal: 328. Huh?? I washed my hands but got the same result. I chalked it up to one of those bizarre D moments and did the correction.

The last few weeks I have been drinking Hansen's Natural Sparkling Waters: sugar-fre… Continue

People with diabetes are easily offended

Apparently Novo Nordisk commissioned a cake in the likeness of a Levemir FlexPen. Said cake is featured on the blog "Cake Wrecks", with commentary about "when professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong."

Injustice at the retinologist's office

I'm rarely a whiner about my diabetes. I'm not a "poor me" sort of person. But something about the bi-annual retinologist visit makes me bitter.

Today I was having my insurance updated by the receptionist and happened to glance down at the daily patient list. The paper detailed each patient's name, insurance provider, and age. I noticed the Insurance column was filled with "Medicare", "Medicare", "Medicare". I looked at the age list. As if it was not apparent by the people in the waiting room,… Continue

It’s always something

I have an important tennis match after lunch. I’ve been testing all morning—everything looks great. I have a quick lunch and head out to the court. Right before I start warming up, I figure I might as well test and prick my finger one more time. 155. Perfect for once!

Hi Lara, I was dx'd 1984 at 12... I would carry my first blood glucose meter in a briefcase every morning to school. The briefcase was super huge, lol! Too funny looking back now.

Cheers!

Hey Lara, I was diagnosed in the 70s and look back (not fondly) on Clinitest, glass syringes and NPH pork insulin. I wish I kept some of the old diabetes equipment because it would be a good addition to an "Outdated Diabetes Therapy" museum exhibit somewhere. I remember seeing a prototype insulin pump that a patient wore as a backpack.

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply back. Until very recently I was on the "old school" Regular & Nph insulins. It worked very well for me for a long time. I switched to an insulin pump and it is fantasic. I have a lot more freedom than what I used to. I wish I would have done it years ago. The only draw back is having it hooked up all the time. It takes some getting used to.

Hi, I found your page by viewing a discussion you responded to. I also support Join Lee Now. I will be holding a walk on October 6 with all proceeds going to The Iacocca Foundation.

My son, Riley, was diagnosed when he was 3 years old. He is 5 now and on an Animas insulin pump.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Lara,

I called the doctor and they will be seeing me tomorrow. Thanks for yelling at me. I'm out of my panic stupor and am taking action. :)
