Definitely know about Team Type 1. I found out about the Omnipod via their website. It's great to see them pushing toward the goal of getting a team to the Tour de France. What a challenge to ride in that. Seems a CGM would be a necessity for that. I guess they know what they're doing since they ride the Race Across America. BTW, I have a friend that will be riding with their RAAM team in 2010....very cool indeed.

Hey Lisa -- I haven't been on the site for a while so am making the rounds. I finished some big bike rides lately and getting the BG management handled pretty well on the 70+ rides. I described my routine to another friend and will probably post that after she makes some comments or asks questions and I can fine tune it.

Hope all is well.

Lisa, I guess it's different for everyone. I've reduced my basals by 20% since I started using the Omnipod, but I mostly wear it on the back of my arms to keep it out of the way when pedaling. That area of my body has never seen insulin or infusion sets, so it's "unspoiled" turf. In the recent past, I've had a lot of problems with inconsistent BG's when placing infusion sets on my belly...lots of scar tissue from years of pumping I think. I've tried the lower back and had good BG's, but very uncomfortable to me there. I'm still experimenting though. I really love the Pod so far, but it has it's drawbacks. More later on that.

It was a process of trial and error. My morning basal rates are set high and taper off considerably in the afternoon. I set a temporary basal at about 65% below normal, which allows me to take in about 25 to 30 g carbs per hour in the first 4 hours. I usually stop for a minute and test BG and plan the rest of the ride accordingly. The tricky part is getting the right basal rate to allow eating on the bike without stopping to bolus. Eating is essential on long rides where a cyclist is burning huge amounts of calories if riding at a good pace. It's different for everyone and takes patience and perseverance to get it right, but that's life for us who deal with this disease every day. It never lets up so we can't let up either :-) By the way, I can't wait for a new A1c test....I'm sure it's much better since switching to the Omnipod in June of this year.

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for the invite..
So, do you live KY or CA?
What a great A1C too. Sounds like you have it dialed in...I have been diabetic for over 30 years, but I still cant get mine down to that level!

Hi Lisa, thanks for the invitation to become friends.
Was also diagnosed type 1, approx 4 years ago.
Your A1c is really good... mine is always between 7 and 8... will have to do better...
Have recently joined TU. Most of the people here are from the US... I'm a foreigner here, as a Belgium. If you don't know where Belgium is, there is always Google Maps ;-)
Did you always use a pump, or have you started with shots ?
If you have questions... just shoot...
Cheers. Nicolas

Hi Lisa - Wow, I'm up to 5 buddies now! Seriously, thanks for the invite and hope to chat with you soon. I've become an avid cyclist in the last year and have experienced amazing results. I am completely sold on the Omnipod for this sport. I'll have to say that BG management can be tricky on my 100 mile rides though, but it's do-able. We can do anything if we put our minds to it.
