Pump failure

So bad day all around! went to test for dinner and I was at 300mg/dl and I was floored!! So I removed the site and took some insulin with my pen, before switching everything just to be sure I got a correction dose. Well I looked at the site I removed and there was no kink in the canulla and no blood so I went to switch the resevior and noticed that strong nothing like it smell of insulin! Pulled the res. out and there was insulin in my pump where the resevior goes!! I was dumbfounded because I…See More

Nearing the end of the semester

I know we are nearing the end of the semester, seeing as we get out may 5th and I know that almost all college kids start gearing up for all those final projects they procrastinated and finals that make or break us, but those of of with diabetes have more on our already filled plates, so my question is what do you do to keep those grades good and keep diabetes happy too? I run my stress away, when I am feeling boggled by class work and club meetings I just throw on some running shoes and hit…See More

Getting Back on track

I have to say it has been two yrs of being off this site and for no other good reason than I was struggling in the Diabetes department and while I am all for sharing my triumph's, I am not so good at sharing my failures. You see I moved away to a new school and was thrilled to be there diabetes and all, but that changed rather quickly. I found I was the only T1 diabetic on campus and the lack of support and fighting to get what I needed was tiresome and I just started letting it all slide.…See More

Okay so this week is finals and I can not wait to be done. I have studied my butt off, lost sleep, and really have been less than diligent in my D care. I am blessed though I caught my slipping before it ended up like last sem. with a week in the hospital. Its fuuny cause I think I honestly was recovering from finals week instead of wacky bg. I have been all over my CGM my bg does not want to pick a point and stick with it. I just have to make it out alive this morning and Thursday and I will… Continue

college and diabetes follow up

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 10:06pm 10 Comments

So as every good diabetic does I made sure I was eating well and getting sleep and not over doing it throughout the whole semester until finals week. Now let me start by saying I am a freaking studying machine the two weeks of finals and this time it got the best of me. It started with a meal skip here or there and then no sleep nights and then the less testing equals more…

Okay so I was struggling with the blood sugars for the past few weeks getting into my college schedule and had A horrible scare last week with A low of 29 mg/dl while walking to my next class. I stopped and sat down in the walk way and tested and called my guy because he is good dealing with my lows and helping me get back to normal. anyways I got that feeling you know the one where you get all sweaty and hot and your vision starts to go all tunnel on you and then goes black then there is that… Continue

PS if you want, send me a private message w/your email address and I'll email you a PDF of the pump pocket template I use - I had a friend who sews her clothes and bags and everything create a set of instructions (because I'm not the world's greatest with a sewing machine) and I use that to make my son's pump pockets. This friend gives very detailed & thorough instructions, and you know, I tried cutting corners on it (no lining, for instance) and found that her way makes sturdier pump pockets that hold up better in the wash.

Hey, sorry to take so long to get back to you but I have been on vacation and staying away from my computer mostly, only just saw the questions you had! So here's the deal:

>So many questions though like how do we keep her from playing with it?

What I do with Eric is, I sew little pockets onto the back of his shirts (where he can't reach) and put a button hole in the shirt itself to put the clip through. A lot of places will sell shirts that have pockets but I do not like them because a) they're boring plain white t-shirts, b) they're expensive, and c) the companies that make them haven't done their research because they have a slit in the shirt big enough to fit the pump through, and what that means for a toddler is that when nap time rolls around, the pump often slides out of the pocket under the shirt and the child can get tangled in it. Scary if it goes around the kid's neck! So I make mine on my sewing machine and I make the slit just big enough to let the clip at the end of the tubing pass through.
what about sleeping with it without wraping herself up in it?

>she loves to play in the dirt do you know if the pump handles that well? The pumps are pretty durable. We live on a farm and so far Eric hasn't managed to wreck his in a year of snow, ice, mud, and dust. Part of that, though, is it's well protected by the shirt pockets. And I take it off him and put a clip into the site if he goes in water.

I will tell you this, things for a toddler are very different than for an older kid, which inspired me to write a book that should be coming out next year - 100 Q&A about your child's Type 1 diabetes is the title, and if I can get the publisher of his tuchus to get things sorted out with the medical coauthor, maybe it will be out by year's end.

Doing well. Off the prednisone for a couple of weeks now, and my numbers are finally back where they were before. On the ambulance all day yesterday, and got slammed with calls. Oh well, what are you gonna do? Going to lab work in a couple of weeks to see if I have insuluin anti-bodies. Just for my info - I started pumping becasue we want to get pregnant and I have to be off of the other crap, but really want to know if I was a T1.5 - insulin requirements are very low, and despite a big weight loss, the D stayed. We'll see. Hope all is well and you are feeling better.
