Flexibility and Agility. Something I used to have and took for granted. Diabetes has affected both.

Posted on December 6, 2010 at 4:08pm 3 Comments

I have had Type 1 for 50 years. I always did everything I could physically partly because I was brought up that way and partly because I knew it was good for my disease. I was always taught that the key to diabetes was the triangle of food, insulin, and exercise. When my flexibility and agility changed at first I did not connect that it had anything to do with diabetes, but now it seems to be true. Any thoughts would be appreciated as to what people do to counteract the symptoms.

I hate the word diabetic. Why is it that my disease also is used to describe me? A person with cancer is not called cancerous.

I know that there is a movement for PWD or People With Diabetes. It has been my mission since I first read the phrase. Every time I hear the word diabetic I ask the person to use People With Diabetes instead and explain my reasoning. Even with doctors. It is hard to explain to other people how the word has an inference, of disease to describe a person with a label, rather than to just use the name of the disease to describe the disease.

hi melinda, I just wanted to stop by to see if you've done your Big Blue Test Today. Dont' forget that every time you log a Big Blue Test $5 is donated to diabetes charities that are providing life-saving supplies and services.

If you haven't yet, go log a Big Blue Test at http://www.bigbluetest.org/. If you have, do another!

Hey my dear!!! so glad you found me, and it is just great to know how well you are doing. Wild Camp also transformed me in a way I could not have imagined before... I am exercising on a regular basis (5x week) but the past weeks have been awful for me i terms of BG, it was a roller coaster I did not live in a little while, SO overwhelming.... But I always keep with me your image and determination when you had a 300 BG and kept running and going forward. I admire you so much! I am glad you have been talking to Carrie, she is really awesome... Is she coaching you? I ask because I feel like I need to keep up with the motivation :) Pls, keep me posted!!! Love, Love, Love, Fabi

Thanks for being there :) That book you recommended for us (Diabetic Athlete) was really a big help. Sam is out of softball now, due to injury, but she'll be back! And someday I will stop going to the dugout to check on her, right??
