Bitter-Sweet Blog

At what cost?

The other day I mentioned getting a "Sensor Error" during my ballroom lesson.  I turned the sensor off but left it intact on my tummy.  The next morning I restarted it.  It was working great.  At lunch, my sensor read 77 and my finger-stick read 76.  It stayed right on track, never varying its reading more than 10 points from my blood sugar machine. So I was a bit irked yesterday when it started

Bloopers!!!!

I am totally stealing Kerri's idea of posting a blooper reel because I have no other blog content.  Unfortunately, before I took my "Making Movies" course, I never saved any of my raw footage.  I always shot in one take because I didn't know how to edit clips together.  If I made a mistake, I stopped the camera, deleted the video and started again.  So the only footage I have to work with is from

Doing what we have to . . .

As I made my way around the D-OC today to see what people were blogging about, I came across Amy's WayBack Wednesday post and I thought it was funny.  Not Funny Ha-Ha, but Funny-Odd.  Why?  Well, because last night I was in the exact situation she wrote about. Pete and I had our weekly ballroom lesson.  As we floated around the dance floor (okay, more like stumbled) I heard the shrill beeps of

Blue for World Diabetes Day . . .

Something kind of odd happened on World Diabetes Day.  I found myself feeling extremely alone, very isolated and quite depressed. Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled that so many great events were going on around the country.  I was happy for all of my D-OC friends who were able to participate in them.  I think The Big Blue Test was fabulous. Pete and I had planned to go to NYC for the pizza

Meme Monday - Thanksgiving Meme

I saw this new Meme last night over at Lynne's blog. Is Thanksgiving really next week already?  Well then, I guess I'd better get this Thanksgiving Meme done!  I'll preface this by saying I have never cooked a Thanksgiving dinner.  We always go to my parent's house for Thanksgiving.  I don't know what I'm going to do when their house finally sells and they move to Tennessee.  I just keep telling

About Me

Hi! I'm Karen and I've been living with diabetes since December of 1979. I was 11 when I was diagnosed. At times it makes me a bit sad that diabetes has been with me for over two thirds of my life. Although at the same time, it makes me feel very lucky to live in a time when you CAN live with diabetes for over two thirds of your life. Things sure have changed over the years.

I'm currently "between jobs", having worked in the advertising department of a cable company for 15 years. The atmosphere became miserable and the stress was so high, and my husband and I decided it wasn't worth the toll it was taking on my health. I've been taking some on-line courses in web design, and still trying to figure out what I want to be "when I grow up".

Speaking of my husband, we have been married since 2004 (my, it goes by so fast). He is the sweetest and most supportive man I've ever know, and he helps me stay strong every day.

I am an avid knit-blogger, but I don't currently have a diabetes blog. I consider it sometimes, but having two blogs seems like too much to keep up with. I do write about my diabetes on my knitting blog from time to time, and maybe I'll do some diabetes blogging over here too!**** UPDATE: I FINALLY DECIDED TO START A DIABETES BLOG AFTER ALL!! COME SEE ME AT BITTER-SWEET!! ****

Please leave me a comment and add me as a friend - I'd love to meet you!

Thanks for the invite. I see that you're a knitter also. Now, isn't that special. I'll have to send along some of my fav patterns. There's a knitting site here as well. Diabetic Knit Wits.

Nice to see you over here! I soooo wish you lived closer so you could teach me how to knit! I am seriously learning disabled when it comes to this, and I would LOVE to knit! Kudos to you for quitting your stressful job - didn't know that about you! I've been there, too!

REQUEST FOR CGMS: DENIED BY INSURANCE

As I mentioned in my last post, Gina has had the wonderful idea that we all raise our voices today and let the insurance companies know how much we need them to approve requests for CGMs.… Continue

REQUEST FOR CGMS: DENIED BY INSURANCE

Gina over at Diabetes Talkfest has declared July 1st as Continuous Glucose Monitor System Denial Day. I personally have not been denied the CGMS . . . . but that is partly because I haven't tried to get coverage for one yet. The way things seem to be going, once my doctor and I decide I am ready to use one, chances are very good the insurance company will say it's a no go.

This is completely unacceptable! Let's raise our voices aga… Continue

High Expectations . . . .

not perfect

So, yesterday was my second follow-up visit with my endo after going on the pump in mid-April. It was also time for my next A1C test. For once, I was excited about this. When last tested, in February, I was at 6.8. I couldn't wait to see what the… Continue

Needles, needles, needles

-This is another old post I've imported from DiabetesFriends.net. Unfortunately, we lost Charlie on February 9th, just a few days after I wrote this post. I still miss him terribly.

As a diabetic, we are all very used to needles. Blood draws, finger sticks, and for some, insulin injections. How many times a year do we deal with needles? Too many.

I've never really thought much about it, and never found anythin… Continue

Introduction

-I wrote his post in January when I jointed DiabetesFriends.net. I thought I'd post it here too!

I've been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 11 years old. Needless to say, there have been a lot of changes and improvements in those 28+ long years. I do believe a cure will come some day - I'm not so sure I believe it will be in my life-time, but I sure do hope so.

My biggest hurdles currently are:

- taking the next big step… Continue
