"Thanks for the info! I just started on a pump a few weeks ago and I'm having a tough time figuring out the timing with symlin. If I take symlin and start my square wave or dual wave bolus before eating, I will drop steadily and then an hour…"

marty peters replied to Jason's discussion 'What are the implications of insulin antibodies?'
"My endo had the same conversation with me about antibodies. I have been on an insulin pump for 4 years but in the last year my a1C numbers have been terrible. I am up to an average of 125-135 units of insulin daily to control my sugar but to no…"

"For the first two months on symlin you have to use a low dose, as they recommend, about 15 mcg. I did that and also lowered the insulin by 1/2 up front. I set my CGM to alert me in 1 1/2 hours when I gave the rest of the insulin. At that point the…"

"I couldn't figure it out. I tried for 2 months and my Ha1c went up, my blood sugars were either very high or very low, and the pattern just seemed random. I did like not being hungry though."

Test Results

Posted on May 6, 2009 at 1:33pm 4 Comments

Well I was really nervous about today's results. My first creatinine clearance test about 5 years ago is what got me started on the ACE inhibitors to begin with. So I was elated when I was told that my test last week showed values even below the standard...so it's better than good! Microalbumin, which had showed up in my last urinalysis due to some blood pressure issues has been reduced to almost nil and I'm hoping to see that go back to 0 after a little while longer on the new meds I started… Continue

A Practical Symlin Guide for Type 1 Diabetics - Part 3: Advanced Techniques, Train Wrecks & Disasters, and High Protein/Lo-Carb Diets

Posted on May 3, 2009 at 10:33pm 22 Comments

So this will be my final post in the three-part series on how to use Symlin as a Type 1 Diabetic. I really want to thank the people that have commented, offered up their own experiences, and contributed constructive criticism. I may do other posts about Symlin but they probably won't be in a guide format, at least not until 2010 when Amylin is due to release their second-generation Symlin product.

This post has been a long time coming because I have been experimenting with different… Continue

If you missed Part 1, you can find it here.

So in this segment of my Symlin guide, I want to get into the realities of day-to-day life with Symlin and what you will go through in working up to your prescribed dose. I do hope that nothing I write discourages you from using Symlin, but I want to be honest about what I believe to be its challenging aspects while I extol its virtues. The truth of the matter… Continue

A Practical Symlin Guide for Type 1 Diabetics - Part 1: Introduction

Posted on February 15, 2009 at 2:28pm 18 Comments

This will be the first of several blog posts that I have been working on for the past month, all written with the Symlin novice in mind and with the intent of encouraging as many of you as possible to start on Symlin therapy. I do not work for Amylin (makers of Symlin), or even in the pharmaceutical or health care fields. I do not own Amylin stock. I decided to write this guide because Symlin is so extraordinarily effective at mitigating some specific issues many Type 1s consistently encounter… Continue

Prayer: Helpful or harmful to those with diabetes?

Posted on December 30, 2008 at 12:31am 20 Comments

I've often wondered how prayer validates itself as a worthwhile activity to those who rely on it for healing and protection, with regards to diabetes and honestly, all other ailments. My main problem with the idea of prayer being efficacious stems from this absolute but undeniable fact:

God has never healed a Type 1 diabetic of Type 1 diabetes.

Furthermore, no Type 1 diabetic has ever experienced a spontaneous remission of the disease. Indeed, no Type 1 diabetic has ever… Continue
