"I use pens and I prime them every single time. I was taught that it was the best way to get rid of air bubbles by pointing it needle up and then squeezing out 2-3 units to get rid of bubbles, and to make sure the needle tip is working properly."

Hello Anita, welcome to Italy! Benvenuta! I hope you have arrived safely and started to settle in well. Let me know if there is anything I can help with, adjustment-wise. Unfortunately, I don't know if there are any good diabetology centres near Venice, but I came across this list of ranking for European hospitals (with quite a few Italian ones) which may help: http://www.corriere.it/Rubriche/Salute/Speciali/Ospedali_eccellenze/Diabete/classifica_europa.shtml
As for the food to focus on, there is lots of great types of cheese and ham, fresh vegetables, salad and fruit here in Italy, so no need to eat pasta or pizza! When I'm at a pizzeria, I always eat "scamorza", which is a melted cheese, quite filling, with a side dish like spinach or green beans. At a restaurant, I'll have fish or a steak. I still enjoy the smell from the bakeries and 'pasticcerie' but I do love the protein and veg that I can get here and find it relatively easy to avoid high-carb foods.

Hi Anita, thanks for befriending me! My doctor's appointment is on 16 December (they moved it last week...) and I'll let you know what she says about the GAD. What did your doc tell you? Reading a few of the other posts here on your site, I am wondering: are you still honeymooning, too? I was only diagnosed in July but hoping for a loooong honeymoon! I am on 3 units of Lantus a day plus 500mg of Metformin and today, all my (pre-meal) BS readings were below 70, which is too low! I hope the doc will take me off medication completely, but doubt it. I achieved this just by eating almost no bread, pizza and pasta (and of course nothing with actual sugar in it) and lots of vegetables, fruit, cheese and some meat, and feel so much more healthy. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Anita - I just read the posts you made back in July...I have a case sort of similar to yours (diagnosed in April 2008, after 4 months realized I likely have LADA and not Type2, now on small dosage of Lantus once a day)...and I was wondering if you ever determined for sure what you have. I'm not testing positive for the GAD or islet cell antibodies so am kind of in diabetes limbo even though my endo thinks I have LADA and is happy with how the Lantus is working. I'm an attorney also - maybe our stressful lives have triggered this after-childhood diagnosis, I always wonder that. Let me know if you figured out what you have and if you think it matters...
