I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1976 just one month before my 13th birthday due to a bad strain of flu that was going around at that time. It attacked my immune system. I started on the insulin pump in 1980 and have been pumping ever since. 35 years later I have no major complications.

35 years of Type 1 Part III

Posted on November 5, 2011 at 4:42pm 0 Comments

After the meeting with the twins I was bound and determined that nothing was going to stop me from getting that insulin pump. So the next day I made a an appointment with my doctor. I could not wait for that day to come! Finally that day was here and I was ready! I point blank said to him I want a pump. His reply was well I would not want to wear something that big on my belt. I looked right at him and said it will not be you who will be wearing the pump it will be me.

Now keep in mind… Continue

So after begin told by the doctor to go sit out in the waiting room while she talked to my father all I wanted to do was cry but did not want others to see. So I recall sitting on a large vinyl couch picking up a LIFE magazine back then they where huge and covering my face while I cried. One hour later I was in the hospital with a bg of 600 mg/dl. Having been hospitalized 2 other times after begin diagnosed which was not uncommon trying to get stabilized I remember having to attend those awful… Continue

35 years ago July 1976 seems like another lifetime ago. I was 12 years old at the time and just like any other kid glad that summer vacation was finally here. At that point in time there was a bad strain of flu going around called the hong kong flu or what we know today at the swine flu. I remember my mother begin so sick from this flu I was scared she was not going to make it through.

This summer vacation from school was one that not only changed my life but my parents. I was an active 12… Continue

Antique, huh? I expect you're a wise one! I'm impressed at how well you're doing.

Real estate is in fact my big problem. I'm using my pumps on weekends, rotating my tummy area, sometimes use my upper butt area. It was a big blow when my thighs stopped absorbing, so I decided I'd be careful to preserve what's left. We eat rather well and at odd times on weekends, so it works out well. Have a good weekend!
