I'm on the Run

Hey Everybody,

I'm on the run and need your support. While I'm not fugitive, I am in fact a Cellmate on the Run.

On October 11, 2009 I will be running the Chicago Marathon with more than a hundred other Cellmates on behalf of the Chicago Diabetes Project. As you may know, both my wife and youngest son are Type 1 diabetics. There is no need to explain to the TuDiabetes and D-OC crowd how diabetes can touch one's life. It is a constant in our household just as it is with the more than 25 million… Continue

Why I think logging on paper rocks

I love logging with pen and paper. It's true. Pen and paper are the most accessible tools to record all things D -- meter readings, insulin & medications, food, exercise, random notes. There is nothing else that is more convenient and flexible. While I believe that pen and paper are fantastic tools, I am not so generous with the standard issue logbook you may find bundled with your new meter.

As a matter of early full-disclosure, I'm giddy about paper because I designed a piece of paper tha… Continue

The Discovery of Insulin

So a friend tells me today that his wife visited The Banting House in celebration of World Diabetes Day. Not able to make an immediate connection, I learned that it was Dr. Frederick Banting that was one of the co-discoverers of the medical use of insulin. If there is something to learn today, perhaps it is this little bit of history.

Hi John

I am also a member of this group and a Type 1 Diabetic. I'm not sure where you are located, butI thought you might be interested in meeting other Type 1s and wanted to let you know that I am the organizer of a meetup group called G.A.T.E.-Gastroparesis And Type1 Diabetes Exchange.

It is for Type 1s as well as for those with Gastroparesis and their caregivers. You can have either condition separately and don't need to have both to join. It is a support and activities group for people with similar conditions to interact, network, participate in discussions, ask questions, share experiences, or to vent frustrations. I will also have guest speakers periodically.

This is a new group that will meet in Union City on the third Sunday of each month starting May 17. If you would like to learn more, please check us out

G.A.T.E. website:
http://www.meetup.com/Type1Diabetes-GP-SupportGroup/

I hope you will consider joining us for a future meeting.

Thanks,
Margaret

John, I'm really glad that you decided to join!! We know all too well that families (not just individuals) face type 1 diabetes... we have a group here for people with "type 3 diabetes", which means having a loved one with diabetes and a group for parents of kids with type 1. I hope that you will join in many of our discussions!
