My absolute most-memorable ride was on US Hiway 34 from Estes Park, CO to the outskirts of Loveland, CO. July 31, 1976 the area around Estes Park saw a devastating supercell thunderstorm and severe flash flooding. There was an estimated 139 death...

I used to tour in my late teens and early twenties. I really dug cruising the mountain back roads and the freedom. I remember getting "thumbs-up" signs from motorcycle riders as I sweated over mountain passes. Stupidest/scariest moment I had was ...

I try to get out on the road as much as possible in the winter - maybe once or twice a week when it turns sub-freezing here in Colorado. We live where it stays pretty dry, but I ride a cyclocross bike when the roads are sloppy. I put $15.00 Freddy...

Hard to say "Goodbye"... to a "Steel Horse"

On July 19, 2009, the minor frame damage that my 1981 19" Lotus Excelle mixte bicycle withstood early in its life progressed to the point of making the vehicle unrideable. On July 25, I purchased a 2008 Specialized Dolce 44cm to replace it. The following week, I upgraded from cage clips to a clipless cleat system. Shortly after, the Excelle was placed in storage, with the thought of stripping it for parts, and/or selling it for parts. (As it turns out, I can't use parts from that bicycle on eith… Continue

The Deliberate Returning

"On Rosh Hashanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed: who shall live and who shall die...who shall perish by fire and who by water; who by sword, and who by beast; who by hunger and who by thirst; who by earthquake and who by plague..."

Yom Kippur -- known in English as the Day of Rememberance or the Day of Atonement, the culmination of the High Holy Days (or Days of Awe) -- is the day in which Jews believe that G-d seals His Judgements for the coming year. If one were to look at thi… Continue

Meme - Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness

This week is "National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week". Since diabetes is "invisible" to many, we have been asked to participate with a blog post, tweet, or other indication of support and explanation to try to make our issues more "visible" to the general public.

I usually don't do memes, but this one seemed important enough to pick up...

Thanks to Suzanne,… Continue

Whole Paycheck. Now I know...

I expect that higher quality will often cost more than poor quality. Between the increased labor of production, culling items that do not meet higher levels of specification, and speeding the process from producer to market, there are costs involved that must be passed on to the consumer or end user. My choice of which level of quality to purchase depends on how much money I have, the expediency in which I must acquire the goods, the ease of availability of those goods, and how much differenc

If there is one thing as certain as the sun's rising in the East, it is that at some time during the day the USS AVENGER chapter of STARFLEET: The International STAR TREKTMFan Association holds its anniversary picnic, it will rain. Hard. It could be in the late morning as we set u… Continue
