My son's take on a scary low....

Last night was a lazy night after a busy week. We were getting ready for some popcorn on the couch and my son was testing his blood in his room. Suddenly I heard a huge crash! I went to see if he was still alive. He swore he was and that he had just tripped--no big deal.

I trusted that all was okay and headed back to the popcorn and a phone call to my mom. As I was on the phone, my son calmly shows me his glucometer...1.3(23). I tried not… Continue

CGM, WTF?

Sitting here checking out other people's blog posts on TuDiabetes, when I heard the distant, but unmistakable, sound of Eric's CGM alert. So off I went, faster than a speeding bullet, to find that his CGM was signaling a low. Not a drastic one, mind you -- CGM was recording 89, and his BG had been running at least 10 points higher than the CGM most of the day. Medtronic button Error Emergency work-around

I am a biomedical engineer and a user of the medtronic paradigm 522 insulin pump. I have recently ran into the dreaded button error that many people have with this specific pump. I have devised a work-around to make the pump usable again (until a replacement is sent.)

If you peel back the adhesive cover for the buttons, you will see the circuit and metallic part for the buttons..

The button error is caused by moisture getting in between the silver metal and gold contact.… Continue

Wash Your Hands!

I know the importance of sanitation. I wash my hands about a hundred times a day, especially when I'm in the kitchen. I wash them to clean them before I start working with food, I wash them upon returning from a break, I wash them when I go from prepping one item to another, and I wash them when I end up with goopy dough hands. Yeah, I've got this hand washing thing down. But it seems that I've forgotten a step.

My blood sugars had been beautiful all day. Then I check them…

Error....doom doom doooooom

Nothing shakes up a sunday night quite like some near death experiences eh? Okay, so maybe “near death” is a wee bit of an exaggeration…but definitely a life-threatening situation. Shall I explain?

so tonight whilst cooking a late dinner, I felt my pump vibrate, I ignored it at first because I thought it was just letting me know that it had finished bolusing….WRONG…oh lord was I wrong, about two minutes later it starts alarming and screaming about like I had never heard before.… Continue
