My friend got her diagnosis today, yep, what she has been hoping for has happened for her....Thursday, she will officially be on insulin. I question her happiness about this, but it's her, she has been waiting for this moment for a long time, like people wait for a baby. Now she can eat anything she wants, drink anything she wants. And to make things even better her PA made an appointment for her with the gastric bypass doc. I'm puzzled, I'm confused, but most of all I am trying to be a good fri…

I began a running plan called “Couch to 5K". If you google it, you’ll find a version of the plan online. It’s a run/walk plan that gets you from walker to runner in 9 weeks. After reading someone’s Weight Watcher’s blog about her experience with it, I thought I’d give it a try. I’ve been on a plateau with my weight loss journey for some time now, and am hoping this plan will push me through those last 3-5 lbs that don’t seem to want to shed!
Anyhow, I’m part way through the second week, and am…

Hello all. So I've recently started biking and running. I picked up cycling about a month ago, and the running just started this week. I'm having major problems with lows. Actually, it's not so much the lows as fixing them that's the problem. I'm currently calorie counting to lose weight. Normal meals and snacks don't seem to the problem, but everything I've used in the past to fix a low seems to be piled high with carbs and subsequent calories. I'm looking for some suggestions.
I keep Gatorade…

I was watching a clip from I believe Good Morning America today here online (I don't watch morning TV - sigh - no time) and came across this interesting bit of info about the benefits of walking - which is something I've always loved to do (my parents would have wished bungee cords were available in the days I was a toddler).
I love to walk - and the benefits of walking in my opinion outweigh some of the fancy schmancy ways of getting exercise - less expensive, can be done anywhere (going up/do…

Well, this week I grew another year. This week, the day before my birthday, my father passed away at 85....why? Smoking, smoking killed him. He started when he was 12 and died when he was 85. I am angry, I am sad, I am frustrated and I am feeling orphaned by the tobacco industry. They took my mother and my father....through their ads about smoking being cool and being okay to do healthwise. So tomorrow, I get to bury another parent because of this incidious disease. Plus in years to come, I will…

I found this while twittering the other day and thought about all the orgs that I look at who need help with the media presence. I have plenty of philanthropic places to choose from, but decided to look within my own disease at who makes a difference and could use a facelift.
Sports has been such a big part of my life, and with age just being active is a lifeline to health. So I nominated DESA, Diabetes Sports and Exercise Foundation for the chance to win $25K for a social media makeover to hel…

Okay, so summer is in its way, but you can seriously ruin or damage your supplies (test strips and insulin, etc.!). Svati wrote a blog about some things and situations to watch out for!

After my diagnosis I had this spasm of a thought that I should join a gym and become one of the Gerbils running on the wheels (treadmills). Don’t get me wrong, I did the local gym thing a number of years ago before I knew I was diabetic (T2). My son was about 5 or 6 and I would drop him off at a swimming lesson that would turn into childcare right after and I would have about an hour to “do the machines”. Treadmills, stairs, orbitals, rowers, weights, you know, The Machines! I felt better but so…

The Fault Based Model includes ,Personal Accountability ,Lack of Willed Power,Unhealthy Eating,Laziness,Stupidity ,Personal Responsibility, and LIFESTYLE. LIFESTYLE is brilliant ,because it restricts the camera lens from expanding onto other factors.Perhaps the cost of fresh produce between 89 and 05 ,that increased by 76.5 %.
My goal is simple ,and that is to promote a conversation about the Obesity Crisis. How can 90 % of people feel that Personal Accountability is the sole aspect of this glob…

I am 'poor' being on CalOPTIMA (California's form of 'Medicaid). But I do pay my bills, I have a little job and can eat, So I'm being both literal and facetious.
As of July 1st, My kind of people (Medicaid recipients) will no longer be able to get Dental, Optemetric, Podiatric or psych, speech et al in the Medi-Cal System.
I saw my dentist this last month, I have new glasses from April. but as a PWD, the podiatrist is a necessary part of my care. I think I'm a tad frightened.

Ok, I have made up my mind and I have decided to give myself three months to try to get my Blood sugars under control through a better diet and more exercise. I will take the same amounts of insulin I have been but start to decrease them as my levels drop through diet and exercise. My biggest problem is gonna be not falling into a depression and getting frustrated with not being able to eat the foods I love. I'm not real big on cakes and candies but I love meat and potatoes. I'm a carb junkie, a…

When I was a HS kid, I was into sports! I rode horses, three day eventing and fox hunting. Lacrosse and hockey, running in my free time and during the winter, cross country skiing. I never felt restricted by my diabetes, probably more restricted by the lack of time to do more of the things I loved!
In recent years, I have been in charge of outreach for JDRF Capitol Chapter and some of the issues I see with teens has been disheartening. I have a hard time relating to purposely missing insulin, i…

Just another beautiful day in Sunny Southern CA. :-)
So, we got 2 bikes yesterday! Nothing to impressive... they have wheels, breaks, pedals, and gears. Which is good enough for me. :-) I am really excited to get out and exercise with my hubby and little boy. We are on the hunt for a good priced and good quality trailer/carrier for our little guy.
I haven't biked in a *long* time... Well, not since I've been prego and dx with T1. So, I'm going to see how my bloodsugar levels respond to my "mild/…

in joining a health club, that is.
DH and I went to
The Institute for Healthy Living today, a new medically-integrated wellness center operated by a local hospital. We had a guided tour and they seem to have a little of everything, including indoor and outdoor walking tracks, fitness and group exercise classes, a large indoor pool, a resistance pool, cold and hot water plunge pools, and an 11,500 square foot strength, conditioning, and cardio fitness room t…

My plan on not skipping meals is going pretty smooth although yesterday I did have some lows. Seems like if I'm not low, I'm high..go figure. Last night when I checked my sugars after doing so well all day I was so angry when I saw a reading of 281 but I think it was due to an over correction of a low of 54 I had 3-4 hours previous. I was hungry at the time so I ate some peanut butter and crackers, bolused for that as well as the correction bolus based on the 281 reading. The total bolus was 3 u…

Well I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We had a very good day. Even though half of us were coming down with a strange sinus/allergy or something. The weather was horrendous. Hot, humid. Then rain all night Friday and all day Saturday. No chance to get out and get exercise and work off all of that wonderful food.
As I am traveling around the Internet, reading about various things. I am finding new and different ways to cook and exercise. I bought that book by Michael Geary for 6pack Abs…

Sometimes, I like that blood sugar is abbreviated "BS." It's rather appropriate right now.
It has not been a good morning. I was having a low yesterday evening in the hour before I went to bed. I think I over-counted the carbs I ate. Anyway, I had to fix the low and go to bed shortly after, so I wasn't surprised when I woke up with my numbers a little high: 144.
So I bolused the correction and went on my way to exercise.
It seemed to stay steady during the entire hour at around 145. Then as s…

After my sinus surgery, I couldn't exercise for 3 weeks. Last weekend was my first opportunity to do so, and I grabbed it with both hands. Saturday was a lovely, sunny and warm day, so I decided to go for a walk in the hills around the dam.
I didn't want to have to eat specially before exercising, so I figured I would do it an hour after lunch. I let my sugars run a bit high, so they were 6.2 (112) before lunch. Before the walk, they were (6.3) 113. This is in the range that my dietician told m…
