medtronic pump clip

I just broke my last pump clip. It got caught on something when I sat down at a restaurant.

Medtronic has been cool about sending me replacements so far. I've been through about a half dozen, including one that broke in the mail. This is what I'm using in the mean time. Pretty sad.

I think the…

saying goodbye

My dad passed away from lung cancer on Friday morning, not long after his 70th birthday. He had quit smoking about 30 years earlier, so the cancer's cause is somewhat mysterious.

He was born and grew up under very difficult circumstances. The type of guy to always pull for the underdog, and believed in try to do the best with the hand you're dealt.

I think my D made us closer in some ways. When I was a kid, he was very involved, and took it upon himself to keep track of my…

first A1C since low carb / reduced insulin

It has been almost 3 months since I lowered my carb intake to ~40g / day. Once I got my basal and carb ratios figured out, I was very careful and kept tight control. For the last month, though, I have been working very long hours, not sleeping, and testing my BG usually only 1-3 times/day. I have stuck to my diet, though. My pump clogged a couple times, but I caught it, so nothing serious.

I just tested on the Bayer home A1C kit. BG at time of test was 81. My result was 6.8. I would…

ghost lows

So, I'm still doing well with low carb / tight control. Reading still stable, and no longer interested in eating carbs at all. I'm gradually lowering my before bed BG target. Now 140-150, along with my night time basal now .775u / hr.

My basal during the day .85u / hr holds my BG almost completely steady. However, in a couple instances, I've mysteriously dropped 20-40pts. This morning, I went to bed ~140. Woke up 62. Took a glucose tab 4g fast carb. Carb ratio of 8 is pretty accurate,…

minor setback

So, a little into a week of low carb / tight control. I had my first > 200. In fact it was about 200 early in the morning, but felt really bad. Took a Corrective bolus. 30 minutes later: 260. Moderate ketones. So I pulled out the cannula. Once again, it was bent under my skin. This time it was a 6mm. I have pretty thick skin, am skinnier now, and probably have some scar tissue.

I tried samples of T-sure infusion sets earlier this week. Seemed to work better than my Quick Sets. I…

First week with good control

About a week ago, I suffered a bout of DKA, probably due to an infusion site failure. It led me (back) to this site, which got me thinking more about my D. I have been told that I have "brittle" diabetic. I have to struggle to keep my A1c between 7 and 8. In a normal week, my BG range was about 30-300. I could easily jump up or down 100-200 points, every time I ate or exercised.

I found that most of the members here, that have tighter control, were taking less insulin and eating much…
