You would think he would listen

to his wise, sage infinitely smart mother. : P Morgan's blood sugar continued to rise after basketball practice last night. By the time he went to bed at 9pm, he was 500+ with a ton of active insulin. I asked him if his site had failed? "no I just changed it Sunday" He said with a lot of attitude. So I check him at 10 and he had come down some, but decided to check again at 11:30. It is always nice to have a welcoming 'HI' at that time of night. I knew his site had failed, but waking him to do a… Continue

Sports and working with coaches

When it comes to Morgan's diabetes, I do tend to be the mama bear and 'bite first and ask questions later'. After the episode with the basketball coaches they were very much intimidated by me and how involved I am with Morgan's diabetes care. We did manage to work through the inevitable tension the freshman coach had with me. I let him know that we are both on the same team, and we needed to let Morgan know that we were ALL on the same page, working together. I attended the nurses' glucagon trai… Continue

"take your medicine before practice

so it doesn't interrupt our practice." Now why the hell didn't I think of that? I usually don't have to deal with stupid, stupid comments from ignorant people, but this comment is from someone who is going to be Morgan's basketball coach. Basketball tryouts started this past Monday. Morgan came out of it with a glucose of over 400. Not good. He can't function well when over 250 and it showed. When I got there to pick him up he was uncoordinated, breathing hard and just didn't look well. I spok… Continue

Tragedy

As the mom of a teenager with type 1 this story really upset me. We have sent our son to diabetes camp and to basketball camp...all within a 6 hour drive from home and have known that he was safe. I haven't fully read the Hill's proposed bill and I am not one to 'jump on the bandwagon' regarding such things, but I will definately check it out. It sounds like this People to People group really needs to be held accountable for their actions (or lack there of). http://www.tylerhill.org/ http://ww… Continue

When I Move Out

(This is a copied post from my blog.)

It has been nearly 28 months since Morgan's diagnosis of diabetes.

I will not even begin to count the number of finger sticks he has had in order to check his blood sugar levels. I will not even begin to count the number of injections/infusion sets he has had in the past 28 months.

I could, probably, count the numbe

Is he stable?

I am usually very tolerant in regards to comments made about diabetes, but today, I have just had enough of dealing with people who really have no clue what it is like to live with this 24/7. Today was the day to get labs drawn. When we went in the first time...they are closed for lunch. So we come back an hour later and wait for nearly 30 minutes for them to get the paperwork in the system. A new gal was training and she missed the first stick...tried digging around, gave the needle to her p

Thanks Coach C.

Morgan has a wonderful basketball coach. Coach C. has been waiting for 1 year to get this team and was actually drooling over them last year when they were 7th graders. When Morgan started basketball this year I went in the first day of practice and told Coach of Morgan's diabetes. He didn't realize that Morgan had type 1 but I told the coach not to worry, Morgan was very on top of his care. Which he is.

Later that first week, Coach C. asked for more informatio

Introduction

Hi everyone. We have been living with diabetes for a little over 2 years now. My son was diagnosed when he was almost 12. He will be 14 next week and we are enjoying the ride of puberty and diabetes. What a wild ride it has been so far!

After working in the medical field, I knew the symptoms of diabetes so Morgan was diagnosed early and without DKA, though his blood sugar was 500+. He is currently pumping with MM722 and LOVES it. I can't imagine going through puberty without it. He sta

Thanks

for the welcome everyone. I joined the community and promptly left town for a salmon fishing trip on the coast. It was an amazing trip and we even caught a few fish! I will post proper replies to everyone as soon as I get the smelly laundry finished tomorrow! Continue
