The Hours My Head Lives in Diabetes-Land

If I think about it, most mornings when the weather isn't obvious, I stand at my living room window while my oatmeal is simmering on the stove, squinting through the trees outside to see if it's raining or not. When the TV news on in the background announces the weather, I pay attention. Well, sort of. It seems to go in one ear and out the other as I'm up and down, in and out of the kitchen stirring, testing my blood sugar, shooting up my long-acting and rapid-acting insulin, trying to think bac… Continue

2,000 Amazing Book Signings

With little fanfare, my husband turned to me about two months ago and said, "Wouldn't it be something if we gave away your books to the speakers and member nations who'll be at the International Diabetes Conference this year? After I rolled my eyes I said laughingly, "It sure would." And, I'm here to tell you it was! 1,000 copies of "50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life and the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It" and 1,000 copies of "The ABCs of Loving Yourself with Diabetes" made their w… Continue

The Secret - We Create What We Expect

I've been reading back through my own posts on my own blog, http://www.diabetesstories.com/stories_blog/, and enjoying them so much I'm going to post a few here from time to time because they're timeless and relevant. I hope you get something out of them too. So here's one from December 2007. Staring out the staff lounge window at the Cumberland Hospital in Fort Greene Brooklyn, just outside the auditorium where I am going to speak, I watch the traffic move along the Brooklyn Queens Expressway.… Continue

The Exhaustion of Chronic Illness, or When Bad Things Happen to Good People

I've generally been a "good" person. I try to do those ten things on Dalai Lama's list. You know, be kind, not hurt others, let people know you love them, hear a tree when it's falling even if you're not there. In addition, there are my hard-wired Virgoan traits: I'm responsible, loyal, a good friend and hard worker. When I got diabetes at 18, after the "Why me?" stage passed, and the denial stage passed, I got back up on my feet and learned to manage this damn illness. Not that it was easy or… Continue

You'd be shocked to know how many diabetes myths you may believe

One of the things I do is speak to fellow patients to help educate them about taking care of their diabetes. Often I'll talk to a support group or at a health fair. I'm not a medical person but a peer-mentor who's been trained to deliver a few educational programs and I have become extremely knowledgeable due to writing a book that just came out about diabetes myths. I just returned today from Worcester, Massachusettes where I spoke to a group of about 100 patients about a lot of confusion arou… Continue

My new endo's score card: 6.75

My last post asked you if you like your endo. I was frankly surprised I got so many positive responses. I wouldn't go so far as to say I now think more people are happy with their endo than not, but I am happy to know there seem to be a fair share who are. All you who don't like your endo are probably too busy shopping for a new one to write in ;) I went to a new endocrinologist yesterday. After I couldn’t get my last test results from my previous endo (after a high potassium level that turned… Continue

How do you feel about your endo/doctor/diabetes specialist?

I'm really curious: Does your endo, GP, diabetes nurse, whomever you interact with for your health care congratulate you when you're doing well? Appreciate your efforts by telling you so or in some other fashion? Croon over your successes, like on your test results? It is very rare for me to come across someone (and I've interviewed 130 people with diabetes) who really likes their practitioner. Most of us feel our health care providers really don't "get" what living with diabetes is like and spe… Continue

Wow, I saw that first!

Kudos to Amy Tenderich for making my heart beat a bit faster. Her July 30th post reported that Israeli company, Medingo, will soon release a new insulin delivery system called Solo MicroPump. It just received FDA clearance and it looks like the launch may be August 4. According to Medingo it's the smallest, thinnest, lightest, most discreet insulin pump without cumbersome tubing. It's comprised of an insulin dispensing patch and a remote control, not unlike Omnipod, but smaller. I was in a focu… Continue
