New Doctor Today

I know that this isn't a traditional way of finding a doctor...but about a month ago someone named "Diabevita" started following me on Twitter. I clicked through and found that the twitter user was representing a family medicine center in Scottsdale, Arizona that specializes in Diabetes management. Interesting, I thought. I ended up clicking around their website and making an appointment. Check it out: http://www.diabevita.com I'll let yo… Continue

Traveling While Diabetic...

Okay, so I don't do as much traveling as I wish I could. And this weekend I'm taking a mini-vacay to New Orleans. I've never done the whole airplane thing while carrying insulin and needles. And was wondering if any of you have any suggestions. PS: Follow me on Twitter if you want to see some pictures of my trip as they happen. http://www.twitter.com/MrMikeLawson Continue

Happy To Be Uninsured

I was standing in what appeared to be a non-moving pharmacy line. The elderly gentleman picking up his medications was confused about the prices being charged, and demanded an explanation. "I"ve been taking these same pills for 10 years," he said. "Why does it suddenly cost more?" I hate this. To make matters worse, the lady in front of me is talking on her cell phone. The guy in front of her is getting visibly grumpy. The pharmacy employee is getting upset. And right then, after waiting in th… Continue

Help Me: Do I need a new doctor?

I've got a dilemma, and I was hoping some of you can help me. Since my DKA in May, I've been seeing a doctor that I randomly found by flipping though my insurance provider's list of approved doctors. I made my first appointment and went in and told him my whole story. I won't bore you with my back-story, but the gist is that my insurance just recently started covering Diabetes care after a long waiting-period because of a "pre-existing condition." Dumb. So the Doctor comes in and is a really… Continue

A good reason to tell EVERYONE you have Diabetes

I remember a couple of discussions in the past here on TuDiabetes about revealing to your co-workers that you have Diabetes. I know that most of us have told the people that we work with...but if you are not sure if you should let everyone know, let me tell you a story: I run a technology lab here in Phoenix for kids (ages 5 through 18). For the past few weeks one of the teens that comes to my program was carrying around a little stuffed pig. It was a really cheap little pig...like something wo… Continue

Doing it in public

This afternoon I was at lunch with the boyfriend, and I whipped out my insulin and injected right there at the table. I'm getting more comfortable injecting and testing in public. I think most people know that when you're sticking a syringe in your tummy it's pretty innocent. So we are sitting at the table this afternoon and I inject really quickly and that's that. "You know," Dan said, "when you inject in public you do it a lot quicker." "Really?" I said, thinking about this observation. "Y… Continue

I'm going to start Atkins

I know a lot of people get angry when the word "Atkins" is mentioned, but I thought I'd throw it out there to see what kind of advice I'd get. So here's my thought: I'm looking to alter my diet to be a bit more diabetes-friendly. Weight loss isn't an issue for me at the time being (thankfully), but I am concerned with maintaining my weight. I have a tendency to lose and gain weight rapidly. So, I was toying with the idea of a no-carb diet. Why is this a bad idea? Continue

I want a pump!! But how do I get one?!?

This might be a dumb question, but I know how supportive the TuDiabetes community is, so I'm throwing it out there: I want a pump, but how do I get one? Right now I inject insulin manually (is that what you'd call it?!). I inject my basal insulin (Levetra) in the a.m. and p.m. and I bolus (humulog) every time I eat. I've heard a lot of you here on TuDiabetes and on Twitter talking about getting approved for a pump through your insurance company. And I'm so curious, how do you get start… Continue

The truth.

It's been kind of strange since all of this happened. To be quite honest, I'm embarrassed that it happened. I'm embarrassed to be writing this. And only a few sentences into it, I'm not certain I'll even publish it. This is my first blog post on TuDiabetes. Normally I blog on my personal site (WhatSomeWouldCallLies), but I've decided to make an effort to become more involved in the TuDiabetes community. Anyway, at the beginning of May I though… Continue
