Anna Kiff (FatCatAnna)'s Blog (29)

When a 10 year old knows as much about carb counting as you do - it's simply AMAZING!

On the weekend in Ottawa, I met up with Catherine, our god daughter and her son Aaron. It was a short visit, as we were doing the rounds on visiting our families, something we don't do that often, even though Ottawa is only a 2 hour drive. Weekends are precious for us working stiffs, so getting away can be difficult as I'm sure you all can relate to. Anyway, I think the… Continue

Freak Out - c'est chic

Okay - first - get this tune up and running in your head (Freak Out) - and you'll then be able to read my dribbles - which I'm able to produce despite having BG's between 2.7 mmol/l - 4 mmol/l - ALL THE FRIGGIN' TIME!!! Going to sleep last night, after eating like it was going out of style, without bolusing, I managed… Continue

Basal Testing Day - D Minus

After experiencing some wacky daytime blood sugars (BG's) during the last week, I decided to go ahead and test out my basal settings on my Animas 2020 insulin pump today. I have never a daytime basal testing before, sad to say, and as in my prevous blog, I had asked others - "how often do you test your basal rates?". No comments yet, and it makes me wonder, are they like mysel… Continue

Stress, Stress and more Stress

My blood sugars the last few days have been abit wacky in the morning as well into the afternoon.. I reached a high of 20 mmol/l the other day, something that occurs once in a blue moon for me, even when I was on multiple doseage injections (MDI). It was to the point where I wanted to chuck out the insulin pump the other day and go back to 8-10 injections a day! Then I thought, hang i… Continue

Wish you were all here my Tufriends - IDF Diabetes World Congress in Montreal - 13,000 attendees so far - AMAZING!!!

Well, I am very fortunate this week to be attending the congress here in Montreal. Luckily I was able to get a volunteer position with IDF and I am having such an amazing time! So much so, that I'm not looking forward to seeing this all end on Thursday as I've never felt so connected to people that know what diabetes is all about. It's truly an amazing experience for me, and something I doubt I will ever forget (anyone want to sponsor me for the 2011 IDF Diabetes World Congress taking place in D… Continue

When your menses bring you down to the level of a slug

Well, I've been having a fun time dealing with the dreaded menses (guys - you can stop reading if this doesn't interest you - but for us diabetic gals - it can play havoc in the control of our diabetes). I can't remember if I had written about this before, too lazy to search back into my blogs to find out if I did, but if I did, here I… Continue

Diabetes or Cancer?

I'm supposed to be on holidays - but we got a call the first night at our hotel room - and it set the ball in motion that we came back home - toot sweet. My friends daughter Jenna, only 17, who has been battling cancer for the past two years passed away - she was such a trooper. Anyway, no snippet like I usually do for introducing my ramblings from my noggin' this time - just click… Continue

Nighttime drink of a vampire – juice boxes rule!!!

I’m a late bloomer, I’m not ashamed to admit this (or should I be?). I took up reading the first of 4 books of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, which Laura, my niece is telling me are really good – PLU… Continue

I want to be the Ralph Nader of Diabetics!

The story about Steven Krueger who died 3 years ago due to malfunction of his Medtronic pump (MMT-511) - has disturbed me greatly. To the point that my mind is in overdrive trying to figure things out (darn frustrating I'll tell you - can't hold a normal conversation with my sweetie pie). Very shocking statement fr… Continue

BOOK REVIEW: Eat To Beat Diabetes - meals that are low in carbs, low in fats and great tasting!!!

Well, as most of you know - I love to cook, I love to eat (my excuse is my clothing has to keep on fitting me - who wants baggy pants around their lower buttucks?). I took out this great book from the library and have been lucky enough to renew it twice - but now it's due back - as it's… Continue

The story of my Dolly Partons as I fondly like to call them ....

Back in my early 30's I experienced some problems with my left breast - and of course - the first reaction was "breast cancer". I was immediately seen by a breast surgeon to determine why my breast tissue was sinking in - along with the lumps (like many women - I have very dense breast tissue). Needle biopsies were useless due to the hardness of the lump - so over the… Continue

Riding thru' the mountains of the Adirondacks

Well, I managed to get out on my "stallion" on Saturday. The engine needed some cobwebs blown out of it - as its not had a good run in awhile. I think after that trip - we (my hubby and I) - have decided another bike is in order if we can't get my original Yamaha working again (carb probs… Continue

Searching for a needle in a haystack

Why does it cost extra for diabetics to retain their drivers license?

It urks me - here in the province of Quebec - in Canada - every 2 years I have to have certain forms filled out in order to continue to drive and for some reason the charges my doctors make for just signing the form continues to go up! Check out the blog I wrote the other day… Continue

Sailing Away

I was just talking to my neighbours out front now. They are Egyptian - such sweet little ladies. They always want to know what's going on it in our lives. I think they live thru' us - which is kind of sweet. One of the ladies is Type 2 - and her younger sister is always telling me how worried she is about her. So, Mike and I watch out for her when her family doesn't come around to see her. She is intrigued by my insulin pump - and between my splattering of French and her English - we have an int… Continue

How to Type A Blog When You Are Having A Hypo In 5 Easy Steps ...

Well, lately at a website I frequent (besides Tudiabetes - we rock !!!) I’ve not been able to post into forums or blogs without having to reach the administrators due to their website having problems with folks like myself using Firefox. And now again, having issues with logging on, but I’m taking advantage of having a hypo – e.g. low blood sugar. I want to write a blog in this frame of mine to see what sort of nonsense comes off my fingertips. I generally don’t like to work in this condition… Continue

10,000 Steps - or ... Tip Toe Through the Tulips

I was watching a clip from I believe Good Morning America today here online (I don't watch morning TV - sigh - no time) and came across this interesting bit of info about the benefits of walking - which is something I've always loved to do (my parents would have wished bungee cords were available in the days I was a toddler). I love to walk - and the benefits of walking in my opinion outweigh some of the fancy schmancy ways of getting exercise - less expensive, can be done anywhere (going up/do… Continue

Crisp bread pizza - low in carbs / fat

I had this hankering for a pizza - but couldn't afford the time/$$$ to drive back to Ottawa (where I grew up) - and have a pizza at my fav joint there (can't seem to find any good pizza places here in Montreal - we have everything else but that). So, I decided to make up something fast and easy (and this is so easy - a child could do it - wait that's me). Most of us love pizza - I know I do. The thing is, it's high in carbs along with fat that it's something I don't eat too much of except when… Continue

Back from a technology vacation

I left the laptop behind on my recent trip to Washington, D.C. and then when we came back home for repacking for sailing - still did not touch the PC. I actually thought I would be foaming at the mouth wanting to switch on my computer - but just being away from all the technology that is involved in our lives these days was oh so nice. Except, when I think about it - I was still hooked up to Antonio (my pump) - so I guess I wasn't on 100% cut off - though no Twitter, no Facebook, no Tudiabetes,… Continue
