Don't Jack with My Basals

I'm high, which means I'm also very cranky at the moment. My well-intentioned CDE suggested a LOT of changes to my basal profile today and asked me to be both brave and patient, reworking my 23 units of basal into 21 units and redistributing those units across the board into a profile she thought better matched my overnight and post-meal needs. She changed my sensitivity from 1:32 to 1:20 and changed my insulin:carb ratios from 1:8 to 1:6. She felt that my post-prandials at lunch and dinner wer… Continue

Wardrobe Malfunction - Bod vs. Pod

So apparently, a pair of Spanx hosiery actually messed up my health for the second time in my life. (The first time was my wedding and the hose rubbed at an infusion set and caused a staph infection to flare up.) THIS time was wearing the Spanx with my second omnipod. I started the Omnipod on Wednesday. I feel like I kind of jumped into the driver's seat while the gas pedal was down, but I think that's just where I am in life this month anyway. (Normally, I'd have read the user guide from cover… Continue

A-1-jeez!

I've been asking my mom for the last year if she had any of my A1c values from when I was under their insurance... I can't believe what she found. I was diagnosed DKA in July of 1990. These are the numbers she had for my first ELEVEN years as a diabetic, followed by my more recent history. How am I still alive and complication free???? 08.20.90 - 12.9 11.05.90 - 11.4 02.04.91 - 12.3 08.05.91 - 13.7 11.04.91 - 13.6 05.04.92 - 11.2 02.03.92 - 13.9 08.03.92 - 13.6 11.09.92 - 15.4 (WTF? - age 13)… Continue

Jumping Ship?

So 9 months ago, I bought a Cozmo. I've liked it a lot. And they're claiming that they will support the device for the duration of my warranty - which will expire in July of 2012. I can get my cartridges from Edgepark and I use Animas infusion sets anyway. Looks like I'm all set, I gu… Continue

I No Can Haz Buzzy

My Cozmo pump has a feature called "disconnect" where you can anticipate the basal insulin you're going to miss during the time you're disconnected and take it ahead of time. For a shower, I usually activate the feature for 15 minutes. It alerts you when the time is up in case you were to forget to reconnect. This morning, I left the pump (in vibrate mode) on the bathroom counter and took a long shower. After the 15 minutes was up, I heard it vibrating (buzz buzz buzz) and ignored it. Washing… Continue

Priorities Skewed...

I suck today. Don't spend so much time on TuDiabetes that you look up and see that you've missed your morning make-up lessons. THEN, don't test and bolus and then spend more time on TuDiabetes until it's been over an hour and your CGM is yelling at you and your sugar has plummeted and you didn't eat the lunch you planned...and you're late AGAIN because you can't drive to the school for your afternoon lessons until your sugar comes up! Ugh! But at least I'm committed to the community, eh? Mayb… Continue

six point one

Got my new A1c results: 6.1 Endocrinologist's exact words (as left in my voicemail inbox): "Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. Call me when you get pregnant." We are closing on our house in two weeks. As of today's weigh-in, I've lost 24.6 pounds since April. I have been approved for my CGMS (if it will ever GET here). Life is...pardon the expression...sweet. Continue

Oh, Walgreens lady. You tickle me.

cashier: Would you like to add a $1 to your purchase today to help the JDRF find a cure for juvenile diabetes? melissa: Why yes, I would...since I have juvenile diabetes. cashier: Really? [puzzled] I thought it was only kids that got that. melissa: Kids grow up. It doesn't go away. [gently now] That's why they're searching for a cure. cashier: Oh, well, I guess that makes sense. melissa: [laughs] Yeah. cashier: That'll be $11.40, the… Continue
