I Never Went to Camp

As a rebellious 12 year old, I never went to diabetes camp. I hated the idea...thought it was kind of dorky at the time. Whatever. I sometimes kick myself for not going now that I realize the importance of interaction with other T1's. I wonder if I would have had better control in high school, and a better attitude as a young adult. Again...whatever. Tonight I will try to redeem myself as I take a road trip to Arizona to support the fine folks from Triabetes and Insulindependence for the Iro… Continue

I'm putting down the gloves...

This was a very good weekend for a fight fan...whether you're an MMA fan or a boxing fan, you likely got your fix this past Saturday night...which got me thinkin... There are so many things that I choose to fight on a regular basis...traffic...ignorance...my alarm clock most mornings. But let me tell you all one thing that I'm no longer fighting...it's something that I know many of you folks still choose to "fight" everyday, and I can't blame ya. It's my good friend Type 1 diabetes. Yeah, tha… Continue

Face the Music

OK so I'm putting on my gym clothes this morning and I check my email. My new lab results are in. Great! Can't wait to see some improvement since I've been working real hard to keep things under control. My last result back in Feb was 8.3. I was pretty confident that I could improve on that, right? So I open the result and there it is staring me in the face...8.3...again. I can't f*cking believe it. Now let me just say something. I bust my ass trying to fight this POS disease. Every freaking… Continue

My Two Cents...again

this topic was closed by the admins before I could post this reply, but I wanted to get this off my chest Man has this topic has been beaten to death. Now for all you Type 2's getting all butt hurt and whining about Type 1's wanting a higher degree of separation from you and your disease, consider this... Not all Asian people are Chinese. Not all Hispanic people are Mexican. Unfortunately our society views the world with blatant ignorance, and that's the way T1's are viewed...its simpl… Continue

51 at work

2nd day in a row...low in the morning. at work. trying to do the water cooler talk when you're sugar is 51 is not fun. had to excuse myself. simply said "bob...my blood sugar's low. i gotta split." ok so his name isn't bob. i just thought the quote sounded better with the name bob. now i post so that i don't overtreat. i overtreated last time. it was ugly. but surprisingly delicious. if you ever saw the movie half-baked where in the beginning there's a flashback scene and the snacks are hug… Continue

Beating the Crap Out of Diabetes, Part III

So the summer of Diabetes Beat Down is officially over and what a life changing 180 degree turn around it was for me. I just got out of a 12 week evaluation at my gym to gauge my improvements. I am happy to say in three short months I've lost 12 pounds of body weight, 6.5% bodyfat, and gained nearly 4 pounds of lean muscle mass. Carb restricting, decreasing my insulin intake, and… Continue

The Greatest Blood Glucose Test of All Time

I'm just watching Good Morning America and I see that the Jonas Brothers are set to perform in a few minutes. There are like a million fans screaming and waiting to watch them...it's ridiculous. I was just thinking...wouldn't it be awesome if in the middle of their set, in front of all the live fans and the billions watching at home, superstar Nick Jonas would whip out his trusty blood glucose monitor and test himself? I can picture him announcing his result on the mic, well in the normal rang… Continue

A Real American Hero

Not a life or death situation...but I just dropped my bottle of Humalog in the kitchen, where there is a 75% chance that it will break on the tile floor. Simply too many casualties to count over the years...oh and that skinny Lantus bottle...make it a 90% chance of breakage. Don't even get me started on that insulin smell...yuck. Luckily because of my ninja-like reflexes, I was able to save the doomed bottle by breaking the fall with a supple hacky sack foot stall...score!!! Some may say that… Continue

Beating the Crap Out of Diabetes, Part II

"My primary objective is to lower my A1C to the low 7's for the first time since the 1990's. If I can do that, then everything will begin to fall into place and I will be on my way to owning diabetes once again." That's what I blogged two months ago in May when I first discovered tudiabetes.com. Prior to that post, my A1C was 9.2 in late 2007. My goal was to have it down by the end of summer, or else I would have to look into getting on the pump. Anyway, I've been working my tail off si… Continue

friday night lows

meter says 58. a nice laid back low, feeling good, feeling like overtreating. the honeybear in the cabinet wants a big upside down hug if you know what i mean. ate the carls jr. prime rib burger and took too much insulin, but the burger was damn good. treating with a juice box and a box of raisins. i was doing some boogie moves at the pad listening to some old 80s music when i started to feel it. the low, not the music. i was feeling the music too though, hence the radical boogie moves. i'd post… Continue

oh it stings.

OK so I've been putting it off week after week, but my first bill is due tomorrow for the insurance plan that I'm paying for out of pocket. I got screwed trying to get individual coverage at a decent rate (another perk of being insulin dependent) so I'm paying a super monthly premium for continued coverage. I basically have to pay back coverage for the last four months plus July to keep myself current. Hooray. I break down and finally call the insurance company (to remain nameless...but it rhy… Continue
