Ups and downs with diabetes

Today marks the 6th anniversary of my diagnosis of diabetes. (I know that in comparison to many of our members, I'm still a newbie. Still...) For some unknown reason, I really like to mark my D-anniversary in some way, but I never quite know how such a day should be marked. So I figured I would at least write a blog post reflecting on my six years with diabetes. Somehow on my D-anniversary, I always think most about my diagnosis, but I already wrote about that… Continue

Carb counting: A family hobby!

My husband just came into the kitchen to grab a snack. I look over and see that he is adding up the carbs in his snack to figure out how much he "should" eat. I smiled, thinking how much my diabetes has affected his perspective towards food. I guess diabetes doesn't only have negative effects on our family. Carb counting is more fun when done with those you love :) Continue

Ketones... again

Over the past 3 months, this is my third (known) episode with high ketones. The first was clearly from a no delivery alarm on my pump. I think that the second was based on a kinked infusion set. This time, I have no idea. My insulin reservoir was running low. I usually wait to change it until it really runs out. So last night it said 0 units. But I knew that there was still enough for my overnight basal. I got up and gave my breakfast bolus and my pump (MM722) allowed me to give the bolus. Lat… Continue

Facing the numbers...

After years of trying to get an A1c under 7, I joined this community was filled with inspiration and ideas. And for about a year, I kept my A1c around 6.5. Since we are slowly preparing for pregnancy, this seemed like a good place to be... with the hope of dropping below 6 before pregnancy. The last few months, my diabetes management was worse. I could see it because I was measuring less often and my meter average was up substantially. Somehow I still hoped that the A1c would come back alright.… Continue

Back to the endo + new pump decision!!

I blogged about my first endo appointment in Hungary (2 months ago) and was a little shocked how he didn't even look at my numbers. I went to my second visit to my endo in Hungary. All in all it went well. I prepared a monthly summary of my blood sugars on one page (last time that I was there, he only looked at 2 days of blood sugars). He reviewed them very carefully looking for patterns (hoorah for an endo that will do that!!!!). He saw a pattern of my nighttime hypos and changed my basal pat… Continue

To the endo every 6 weeks!!!

Well, I went to my first (regular) endo appointment in Hungary-- with a pump specialist. It was short sweet and to the point. He glanced at my numbers and was amazed at how great they are!! BUT he only looked at the last 3 days (when I indeed had really good numbers)!! I brought in 3 months of numbers. Oh well. Made me look better than I am. He checked my feet and they seem to be fine. Took blood for the A1c and thyroid. I asked a few questions. Then he said, "OK, see you in 6 weeks. Bring you… Continue

Vacation and pump vacation

As I write to you, our bags are packed for a week on the beach! This will be a much needed time of re-cooperation and relaxation as our lives have been chaotic and in transition! So it is time to get away for a bit.... So I won't be around TuDiabetes for about a week-- which for some of you might not seem like much-- but when you spend at least an hour here everyday, it's a long time to be away! I decided to go back to injections for the week and take my pump off. So I'm currently not wearing… Continue

Pump warranty

I have had my Cozmo pump for a while now, but I couldn't remember how long the warranty lasts. So I called one of the friend Deltec Reps and asked. Turns out that the answer is 4 years, which means my warranty is up in December (has it really be almost 4 years together??? Wow.) THAT means-- it's going to be time for a new pump. This time, it's time to figure out how to get a pump in Hungary. I no longer have insurance in the USA-- so it won't be an option there, but I am now in the Hungarian… Continue

My pump holder

Just wanted to share with you my favorite pump holder. It's an Case Logic MP3 player case. I usually clip it to my belt loop, but there is also a strap that you could use (or make one). I like it cause it covers the pump and protects is well, but it is easy to slide off and use the pump as well! Just thought that I would share in case anyone is looking for a new pump holder. It should be available at electronics stores or anywhere where you can buy an MP3 player. I know that it is available both… Continue

We all have bad days...

... I just wanted to post because today was a horrible blood sugar day. So often we are tempted to show our good, "well-controlled" diabetes side. So I decided to share my numbers with you... so that if you have a bad day, you will know that you are not alone. I should add this is one of those bad days that I can completely blame on myself and poor decisions and bad management. All I have to say is, I hope that tomorrow will be a better day! Starting from midnight last night: 12:29am- 63 mg/d… Continue

6.5!!!!

For almost 5 years, I've been trying to get my A1c under 7. It finally happened! I must say that this is in large part due to ideas and support from this community!!! So THANK YOU!!!! I can say that the single biggest change that I made was bolusing 20-30 minutes before eating. Fast-acting insulin is not immediate acting insulin! ;) Continue
