Diabetes Alert Day.

Received an internal email from the matabolic research side of the company promoting Diabetes Alert Day in collaboration with the ADA. I think it totally misses the opportunity to bring aware to the different types of diabetes. As a Type 1 I get the ignorant "you got to exercise and lower your blood pressure' comments. People sometimes ignore the rather thin 140lb, 5ft 4in, human being standing in front of them. Here's the link: http://www.clearspring.com/widgets/49b975e5a7ea8f33?p=49ba630841d… Continue

A review of the Diabetes Log iPhone App

The iPod Touch is like the iPhone except for the phone ... and the GPS ... and the camera. Just like the iPhone I can browse the web and check email with Wi-Fi, and play movies, music and games downloaded from the iTunes App Store. It's a super ultra-portable. I have an iPod Touch and I have diabetes and I am a geek. So of course I launch the App Store on my iPod and search for "diabetes" and find a few diabetic applications. One of these is,… Continue

Low Carb Beer Recommendations

Beer bottles on wall One of the challenges of being a Belgian and Ale drinker who also has diabetes is that most of the great tasting brews have a lot of carbohydrates and some have a lot of alcohol. Alcohol presContinue

Vertigo

57214038_535ca793cf_m.jpgI sometimes suffer from bouts of vertigo. Not sure what brings it on but it usually doesn't last more than a week. Except a few years ago just before I was diagnosed with LADA. Come to think of it that was the first time I ever had vertigo. My regular physician thinks it's fl… Continue

Health 2.0 - A Web 2.0 blogger is diagnosed with diabetes

A writer for tech blog Read/WriteWeb, Richard MacManus, is diagnosed with diabetes and discovers some of the best resources on the web. Although a fairly long post, Richard gives a brief introduction to each web site and how he found it useful. A few of my favorites are mentioned, including social network TuDiabetes founded by Manuel Hernandez and diabetes stats web site SugarContinue

Walk for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

On October 28 I will be walking in the Walk to Cure Diabetes event benefiting the Mid-Jersey Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

My personal fund raising goal is $1000. I would appreciate any support that you could give me for this very worthwhile cause.

Since there are more than 18 million Americans affected by diabetes, I believe that my work with JDRF is important and well worth the effort. I am particularly proud of the fact that JDRF has provided more fun… Continue

Cursory review of SugarStats.com

As I mentioned earlier I have been using the SugarStats.com web site to track my blood glucose and insulin dosages. Along with the Calorie King Exercise and Nutrition Manager the web site has helped me in controlling my BG. It's the modern day equivalent of a log book. I can see how my BG changes over time and how insulin and diet affect my BG. It's like a feedback loop. I log my current BG, record my mea… Continue

MIT Technology Review: Detecting Cell Loss in Diabetes

I think this is quite exciting research.
Technology Review: Detecting Cell Loss in Diabetes
A novel molecular tracer could help doctors track the loss of insulin-producing cells in diabetes. Such a tool would allow both doctors and drug developers to better assess the effectiveness of new treatments. It could also shed light on the disease by allowing scientists to correlate loss of insulin-producing cel

Vertigo

Anyone here suffer from vertigo? I had a really bad case a few weeks ago that left me in bed for three days. The family doctor put me on meclizine which helped until the vertigo subsided. He did not find any upper respiratory infections that are usually the cause of my vertigo.
During this period I found it VERY difficult to control my blood sugar. My daily BG average is 100 but during this time my average was 150 with several readings over 230. Continue

SimpleShot

David Pogue, a tech writer for the New York Times, reports on a new invention called the SimpleShot. The device provides an injection of glucagon, a hormone produced by the pancreas that stimulates an increase in blood sugar levels. Diabetics on insulin are often at risk for hypoglycemia, an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood. Normally administering the glucagon involves mixing a powder and a solution.… Continue

Continous Glucose Monitoring

At my last checkup my endocrinologist suggested I look into a DexCom Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system. My BG readings sometimes make no sense. Two hours after a meal my BG will be in the 70s but fours after the meal my BG can jump to 126. Weird.

The CGM would allow him (the endo) to get a better understanding of my BG through an extended period but the device appears to be costly and medical insurance does not cover the cost.

I have read Amy's ( Tenderich )… Continue

June 14, 2006

That's the day I was told I had to start poking holes in my body and carefully read food labels for the rest of my life. As I digested the bitter sweet (pun intended) fact that my hyperactive immune system ( I almost never got sick and suffer from spring and fall allergies ) had chosen to make war on its host I wondered quietly to myself if this meant I could eat as much Dungeonous Crab as I wanted.

Read my blog, "honey sweet".
