Some thoughts on life as a parent with T1

I know I'm long overdue for a blog post, but I thought I'd add a few thoughts on being a parent with T1. I love being a parent to my dear daughter-- she is such a special blessing to me. She's 6 and a half months old now, and is a happy baby, except for when she's hot or hungry!… Continue

My daughter was born healthy on 12/29/08! She was worth all the hard work that a T1 pregnancy requires. :)

My husband and I welcomed our daughter (our first child), Sydney Hop… Continue

Still pregnant!!

I'm now just a couple of days shy of 36 weeks, and things are going well!! I still don't have any signs of pre-eclampsia, and I pray that I won't get it. I'm still checking my bp each day and checking my urine every morning for protein and ketones. I have had a couple of instances of ketones but never because of a high bg; I chug water and eat carbs and they go away pretty quickly. So I have to be super vigilant about eating a bedtime snack, which I don't like because I feel like I have already… Continue

Pregnancy Update (only 2 months to go!)

I have been meaning to post an update on my pregnancy but the weeks keep getting away from me! My husband and I are trying to clear out some of the closets in our house and move some things around so that we have room for our little girl. :) And two of my good friends are planning a baby shower for me. Life is good! Over the past couple of months, I have been to my perinatologist and endo/CDE a LOT (no surprise there). Here's what's been going on: * My bgs have still been staying a little on the… Continue

I'm pregnant!!

I'm 21 weeks along and still can't really believe it! I am having a C-section scheduled for Dec. 29, 2008, and we found out we're having a little girl! We are so excited. (I'm having a C-section because I broke my pelvis in a car accident several years ago-- not because of my T1.) Here is a picture of all the tests I took in May, when we found out I was expecting! (You can tell that I always like to double-check everything, right?!)… Continue

REQUEST FOR CGMS: DENIED BY INSURANCE

I sought coverage from United Health Care for my CGMS that accompanies the Minimed Paradigm 722. UHC denied coverage, and I paid out of pocket for the cost of the CGMS. Insurance companies need to GET A CLUE and realize that PREVENTING complications of D is a GOOD investment, and wo… Continue

Diabetic Runner Challenge (Part III) + Team Type 1

I'm still logging some miles for the 2008 Diabetic Runner Challenge. If you haven't signed up but like to run, jog, walk, or log miles on your feet, then I encourage you to sign up!! :) Since I last posted my miles, I ran the annual DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, which was great!! The course was point-to-point, rather than a loop, and I really liked that. It had a few rolling hills, but wasn't too bad. My brother ran it with me, as usual, and we had a great… Continue

The Diabetic Runner 2008 Challenge

I signed up for the Diabetic Runner Challenge last month, and have been meaning to list all my distances for a few weeks now! My current list is below. Participants who sign up for the challenge agree to run either 500 or 1000 miles in 2008, and track their progress on their website or blog. I signed up for the 500 challenge. The Diabetic Runner Challenge is a F… Continue

Out of the closet with Type 1

I have lived my entire adult life "in the closet" with Type 1. I have taken desperate measures to make sure that only a handful of people who have known me even know that I have T1. In college, only my roommates with whom I was close knew, and in law school, only one person knew. I have been at my current job since October 2005, and have not told anyone about my T1. Until today.

I had a horribly scary low bg at my office today. I went from 79 to below 30(!) in just 20 minutes. I usuall

T1 diagnoses on the rise in U.S.

I came across this article today in the Colorado Springs Gazette: http://www.gazette.com/articles/diabetes_32157___article.html/type_insulin.html The article states that T2 isn't the only type of diabetes diagnosis that's currently on the rise; T1's are on the rise, too. I also recently read that kids with T1 are getting diagnosed at younger

Glucose Tablets from other countries

I am moving this to a blog post, so you may have seen this before. :)

This is a photo of the glucose tablets I bought from the oldest pharmacy in Europe, which is in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
I packed more glucose tabs than I thought I would need for our 2+ week trip to Europe, but by the 4th day I was already

My recommendation? Demand a new pump from Medtronic if you have battery problems

The saga with my Minimed 722 continues....

I went to bed late on Tuesday night (around midnight), checked my bg, and all was well. About 12:30am, just when I was falling asleep, my pump sent me an alarm. I got up to check it out, and saw that it was alarming because of a low battery. Since they always teach you to NEVER go to bed with a low battery alarm, I got up to change it. When I tried to put in a new battery, the pump stopped working altogether-- the screen was blank, and it acte

Sad, sad articles -- Jail sentence for a T1 who had a hypo episode behind the wheel

I saw this article today about a 26-year-old guy with T1 who passed out while driving and hit and killed a man. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail. Here is the article: http://www.timesheraldonline.com/ci_7590155

Speaking of jail sentences, I also saw another article about a guy with T1 who died in jail because the nursing staff didn't check his bg. Here is the link:

A few problems with the Minimed 722

I have had a few problems with my Minimed pump over the past week. It's a bummer because I'm a big Minimed fan-- I have had a Minimed since 1992 and I can't imagine life without it!! I don't know if I've just had bad luck with the 722 model, but I'm on my second one and am having mechanical problems with it. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced these problems...

It all started while my husband and I were on our way to NJ the night before Thanksgiving. When we got in the car, I

Trip to Europe and the story of test strips

My husband and I were blessed with a wonderful trip to Europe this year. We left on a redeye flight on Oct. 27 and arrived in Rome on Oct. 28. From there, we took a cruise from Civitavecchia, Italy (near Rome) around the Greek islands, and ended the cruise on Nov. 9 in Venice, Italy. After arriving in Venice, we took the train to Florence, stayed there for two nights, and then continued on to Rome, where we stayed for three nights. We returned home to Virginia on Nov. 14.

Here is a lis
