World Diabetes Day is the day after tomorrow, and I have absolutely nothing to do.
Last year I was at school, and I made a display on the bulletin board and asked my classmates to wear blue. Few of them did, but at least I was able to do something.
This year it's on a weekend, and I'm not at work. I wasn't at work all week, due to the Remembrance Day holiday. (We always get a week off -- without pay -- when there's a holiday.)
There's a Big Blue Bike Ride on Saturday morning, but I can't ride…

I haven't been around much lately. I leave for work at nine in the morning and get home at ten at night -- sometimes even later -- and that doesn't leave much time for the computer, or for anything else!
I saw Dr. Miller on Wednesday. I asked him about getting a flu shot for H1N1. He said that I don't
have to get the vaccine, but I am in the "recommended group" for getting it. It sounds like it's more even more of a danger to my asthma than it is to my diabetes.
He gave me a new insulin…

I don't do low-carb. I don't avoid bread, cereal, pasta, rice or fruit. I will occasionally eat pie or cake or cookies, but not very often. I simply try not to overdo the starchy foods or the fruit, and I allow myself 'treats' like pie or cake only once a week or so. I try to read labels where I can so that I know what to expect from the food I eat.
One problem I have is that I don't like to cook all that much, so I tend to eat a lot of packaged foods. Now that I'm back at work until the end of…

I was getting excited about attending the AC Cyclebetes wrap-up party at Willows Beach at the end of September, until I realized it was a JDRF-sponsored event.
I have what you might call "issues" with the JDRF. When they first started a chapter here in Victoria, I was enthusiastic about volunteering and working with them. This was until I started attending some of their events.
"We're here to raise money for the CHILDREN WHO HAVE DIABETES!!!!" was the rallying cry at these events.
"Think of a…

I have to admit that I am a lousy housekeeper. I normally do house cleaning only when absolutely necessary, either when company is coming or there's going to be an inspection.
However, my asthma has been pretty bad lately, and I've been feeling like I have either a cold or a really bad case of allergies. The boyfriend said he'd been feeling that way too, and he doesn't have asthma or allergies! So I figured it was probably time I did some vacuuming. I'm also going back to work tomorrow after be…

I had high blood sugar all day again today, and I think I've discovered the culprit: I have an expired penfill of NovoRapid on my hands. I checked the label on the box, and I last filled the prescription sometime in June. I'm due for a refill, but the NovoRapid is the only prescription that I have to pay something for. It's only 20 dollars, but I don't
have 20 dollars at the moment, and won't until next week. So I'm going to have to keep using this expired vial and increasing my dosage (a…

Saturday was "hypo day." Yesterday wasn't quite as bad, but that might just have been because I was more aware of my tendency to go hypo and tested a lot more often. Twice I caught myself right on the verge of a low (3.6, while my endo says that "low" is anything below 3.5), and once I caught a full-blown low (2.0.) Because of that, I reduced my Lantus dosage by two units last night.
Unfortunately, that seems to have sent the trend in the other direction. After a perfectly good 5.4 result befor…

Yesterday seemed to be "hypoglycemia day." I had repeated incidents of hypoglycemia all day. First one was at about 4:00 a.m. I treated it with sugar cubes and cheese slices. Then I had another one at breakfast time around 9:30 a.m. I halved my normal breakfast-time dose of NovoRapid, and this seemed to do the trick of preventing hypglycemia before lunch, although my blood sugar was a little high at lunch (8.9).
At lunchtime I took my normal dose of NovoRapid, minus one unit. Then I went for a…

Unfortunately, I don't have any.
This is when I am grateful that the government is paying for my insulin, needles, test strips, etc., because I can't even afford food. There's no way I could afford to pay for meds.
I've got approximately $30 to last me for ten days (which is when my disability cheque arrives). I've been eating cheap food for the last few months since I got laid off. I'm currently living on baked beans on toast alternating with canned spaghetti and ravioli. I haven't yet resort…

This is my blog. If you don't like what you're reading here, you have a choice. You can choose not to read it. If you want me to put a subject "to rest," if you want me to "move on," too bad. No one is forcing you to read my blog. I mentioned earlier that I was considering cutting back on my participation here, or even leaving; people asked me to stay. Yet suddenly people are telling me to stop talking about insulin pumps and my inability to have one.
If you have an insulin pump, good for you.…

1) Neither my endocrinologist nor the local diabetes education centre has any way of finding me a pump. I've asked. Repeatedly.
2) Moving to another province? If I could afford to move to another province, I could afford to pay for an insulin pump. It's not just a matter of packing everything into the car and driving off into the sunset. I don't even have a driver's licence, never mind a car. A car costs about the same as an insulin pump costs. Believe me, I've seriously considered trying to fi…

People probably get tired of my ranting about insulin pumps all the time. They probably don't understand why I get so upset when I see people mentioning them on the Type 1 forum, and they say, "Okay, you can't have a pump. Understood. Now let's get back to the topic at hand."
Part of the problem is that it seems like the answer to any question proposed in the Type 1 forum, even ones that specify injections rather than pumps, seems to be "You could easily solve this problem if you had a pump." T…

I take my once a day Lantus injection at ten p.m. Every day at ten p.m. it's time to take the Lantus. I seldom go out at night, so I'm almost always at home at this time. A few months of the year I'm likely to be working at ten p.m., and those nights I remember to take the Lantus pen to work with me.
Anyway, this evening was the annual Symphony Splash. This is when the Victoria Symphony sets up on a barge in the harbour and plays a free (by donation) concert for around 40,000 people. It ends ar…

I think I just do not belong here on TuDiabetes.
I'm Canadian, and I believe in a national health care system. Most people on TuD are Americans and think that national health care is TEH EBIL.
I don't low-carb. I don't avoid bread, potatoes, white rice, pasta or pizza. I don't like brown rice, brown bread or whole--wheat pasta. I don't go out of my way to find "low-carb" foods on restaurant menus. Apparently that makes me a heretic. Everyone on the forums is low-carb this and low-carb that and…

Today was a better diabetes day than yesterday. I was still high first thing in the morning (9.0) and I took a lot more NovoRapid at breakfast than I normally do. Lunchtime BG was an acceptable 7.5. Again I took a lot more NovoRapid than normal (wish it had occurred to me to keep track of my dosage on my meter) and I decided to go for a walk after lunch. My BG before I set out on my walk was 4.4, so I drank a can of regular Coke before heading out.
When I arrived at my destination, my blood sug…

First thing this morning, fasting blood sugar is 7.7. That's a little higher than usual (my fasting blood sugars in the morning are usually low) but it's not bad, so I doze for about another half hour and then get up and eat breakfast. I remember that yesterday I took six units of NovoRapid at breakfast and went low by noon, so I take five units this morning for the same breakfast.
Two hours after breakfast, blood sugar is 13.2. Huh? Oh well, it should be better by lunchtime.
Nope. Lunchtime r…

Someone told me today that "universal health care is the reason why you don't have an insulin pump." I think there is some confusion here about why I do not have an insulin pump and why I say that I can't have one. The reason I can't have an insulin pump is that I cannot afford one. The government is not
preventing me from having an insulin pump. They simply won't pay for it because I'm over 19 years old. If I lived in Ontario, the government would pay for me to have one, but I can't affo…

Some days -- lately, most days -- nothing goes my way. Nothing works. I just get so fed up. Not with the diabetes itself, per se, but with everything that comes with the diabetes.
Take insulin pumps. I've mentioned this many times before, and I'll probably keep mentioning it. I cannot afford an insulin pump. As I often say, I don't have a spare $6,000 lying around, and I also can't keep up with any kind of payment plan. I don't have a job at all right now, and any job I get will either be seaso…

I have a membership at Meetup.com that allows me to form three Meetup groups. I run a very successful group for adults with Asperger's Syndrome, and I decided to form another group for adults with Type 1 diabetes
I got this idea after I received an email from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation telling me about a "diabetes support group" in my area. I eagerly attended the first meeting, only to be informed that it was a "PARENT" support group and that I was not welcome.
I then tried the…
