fear of lows is rulling my life!!

I have been averaging BG readings between 12 and 25 for the past 9 months and have been diagnosed as insulin resistant, Ive been have the worst time ever, they put me on metformin 500mg and advised me to take lantus in the morning as well as in the evening. I test at least 10 times a day day and dont go anywhere without coke or a snack as soon as it drops to 10 i get symptoms of a low. i limit myself in daily tasks and dont even excercise anymore or eat more that 3 time a day.....this fear of a low is getting to me now!!!!! any advice

I sure can understand. I just recently went on the pump and I keep going low. I try to exercise but go low during. Very frustrating. I've gain 5 pounds. Argh! Keep your doctor aware of these lows. Sounds like a medication adjustment is in order. Good Luck!

This is somthing I live with daily, and always have. Like you, I just check a lot, and always carry glucose tabs with me. I mean everywhere, even if I am just going into the yard. I don't know what a reading of 10 is, but likely your body will adjust to tis lower range (as long as it is within the normal range).

No this ten is not within the normal range and i would like to get it to the normal range, but because my body is so used to the high sugars and if they are normal it feels like im having a low and i start to panic....it is such a frustration to get it down to normal without fearing it so much.

Your body will adjust as you get tighter control, but it may take some time. Are continuous glucose monitors available to you there? If so, you can watch your blood sugars more closely and it helps to catch lows.

Makes me wonder if you're absorbing all the carbs you're eating -- have you been checked for celiac disease? Do you have any digestive problems (anything ranging from being continually gassy to IBS-like symptoms)? If so, you could have hyperpermeability in your digestive tract and simply aren't digesting all your food, so you're not absorbing everything you eat, which means you're not getting sufficient glucose to offset the insulin you're taking. Not exercising is counterproductive though -- exercise decreases insulin resistance -- you'd be better off continuing to exercise but making sure you have a supply of glucose in hand at all times. Also make sure you're eating your carbs with protein every single time, as that will help to slow the absorption of carbs and decrease the glucose spikes that mean you need more insulin.

I have NO advice. You would think I would after 37 years of having Type 1 but I don't. Lows have always ruled me since I had that 1st wreck from a low. I love it when ppl say check before you start driving. Done that b/c of my insulin resistance and such I will fall with in 10 miles and have a reaction. Looks like you are doing what I would advice you to do.

If the 12 and 25 you mentioned are mmol/L (compared to mg/dL) then those numbers are higher than recommended (assuming I did my conversions right :-). So going below 12 would be beneficial in the long run. So making goals to decrease those numbers slowly (through adjusting medication and/or increasing exercise) would be a great asset for you. As you first start experiencing numbers below 12 or even 10, you may not like the feeling (you'll feel "low", although those numbers are not really low). Once your numbers start leveling out at lower levels then that feeling will go away and your new "low feeling" will be more of a true low number. I think it would be best to speak with your physician about how best to tackle the issue of bringing your numbers down without leaving you with such a fear of going too low.
