Continuing to share my story of how I ended up becoming diabetic. Who I was before becoming diabetic, my eating and activity habits, and my lifestyle, plus the influences that support the lifestyle.
Comment by acidrock23 on April 29, 2012 at 9:46am I don't think that you necessarily get diabetes from carbs. I think it's a genetic defect that results in autoimmune attack (T1) or a variety of conditions that can lead to a similar "endgame" pathology (T2)? I think there are different genes involved in the different conditions too.
Comment by Shawnmarie on April 29, 2012 at 4:03pm I agree with AR that I don't think you caused your T1. Too much sugar is not good for the body, but I don't think there's any scientific evidence indicating that it causes the autoimmune attack that results in T1. Then again, maybe you're aware of some research that supports that theory.
Comment by PaulQuessy on April 30, 2012 at 1:18am The point within the blog is that the body is allowing the islets to continue to produce insulin continuously allowing the sugar within the blood stream to flow to the cells. Yes too much of this is bad for the body, so the body then becomes trained to stop the damage that was happening to the cells through cutting the supply of sugar into the cells through cutting of the production of insulin. I agree that genes are a point within the cause as well.
I know that a lot of folks here feel differently, that carbs caused their diabetes, but I've been told every which way from Sunday, ever since the 1970's, that's not true. And I've never seen any published journal articles saying that carbs cause either T1 or T2.

Comment by Bradford on April 30, 2012 at 9:30am I agree w/ the others that "eating too much sugar" has not been published as being associated with causing T1. While eating a diet consisting largely of sugar (like candy) is not necessarily a great choice as a kid, I don't know that there is any evidence to say that "eating candy as a kid caused me to get T1 diabetes".
Comment by PaulQuessy on May 2, 2012 at 1:02pm Share your eating diets as a kid. The body is a system that has many triggers = we all have cancer within us it is only the triggers that we participate in that create each disEASE. Diabetes is within all of us and it just does not one day decide that it is going to now attack the pancreas, as the doctor's say with the definition of `auto-immune` deficiency. The body had to be sent a message that the pancreas producing insulin is not in support of the body, so one must look within the each's past and find out how each one created the message to trigger the immune system to attack the pancreas.
Sorry about the late reply and the lack of blogs, I have been traveling for the past day. I will continue to blog once I get settled back home.
Thanks for the replies as well, and Share your stories too!
Comment by Shawnmarie on May 3, 2012 at 10:15am I wonder whether it's a chicken/egg issue. Because diabetes impairs blood glucose regulation, perhaps it was already starting to do so when you were a child. Your cells may have already been experiencing glucose deprivation on some level and were, therefore, fueling your cravings for sugar. I know in the four months before my diagnosis, I was eating almost nothing but carbs because my body kept telling me that's what it wanted. My poor cells weren't getting the glucose they needed and the only way they could try to get more was for the body to signal me to eat more carbs. I don't think eating the carbs caused the diabetes, it was a symptom of it for me.
