Hey Guys,

Here's my blog I guess................. I'm still trying to figure out this computer so PLEASE be pacient with me.

I am a Type 1 diabteic and have had it for 34 years now. I took it way back in the dark ages in 1973. I Particapated in almost every trial that they have come up with. About 15 years ago I did the pancres transplant when it was trial and no insurance would cover it. Fund rasing was a pain but I got through it and raised enough to get it and for the meds that weren't covered then. Unforchantly I rejected 2 years later and now have diabetes again. When I found out I was having my 1st daughter I went on the pump way back in 1987 then 17 months later (after the birth of my 1st) had a 2nd daughter. Now I don't know what I would do without the pump!

I have a new 9 month old granddaughter that my 1st daughter (who is now a Type 1 too) had in Oct. She was born on Friday the 13 which I now consider good luck. I really didn't til she was born. On this last Friday the 13th in July she turned 9 months old. She is my pride and joy! I thank God everyday that I was able to have her mom and aunt and not she's here. When I 1st took diabetes the Dr told me I would never be able to have any kids at all. OK both of them came at 7 months one without a left hand but we've made it through!

I have been married to the same man for 23 years although he gets on my nerves I love him and he loves me. He can tell you more about me than I can probably. He's had 2 heart attacks and is currently down with a bad back but the way I look at it life has to get better.

Hi Doris and thanks for saying hello.
Good luck for your growing family. There's nothing like the love you get from your children. I hope your husband feels better too. A bad back is so irritating.
I will put up a picture shortly. I agree, it's better to have a picture to go along with a community blog.

Hi Doris, thanks for the invite and your story is amazing. Currently, I am now trying to have children and my new doctor informaed me that the Lantus that I was on was not used for women that are trying to give birth. Needless to say I was a little upset. However, now she has change me to Homoglobin and Metformin. She suggested that I get on the pump as well but I want to learn how to eat right before I take that step. It is a process but I know that I will make it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Doris Ann. Thank you so much for your kind welcome. I'm already learning by reading your story. Congratulations on your children, grandchildren, and loving marriage- not to mention your optimism and courage in managing diabetes.
As you know, parts of TN, WVA, VA and NC have pretty high diabetes rates. New programs to address such issues are getting high priority status. A lot of brainstorming is in the pipeline. Let's stay in touch. [PS, I say I was born in the Deep South]

Hi Agian Doris,
I use to live in Memphis - I moved to Arkansas 7yrs ago. I'm wanting to get my daughter on a pump - but she doesn't want it. I was at a JDRF walk last month talking to a Rep. from one of the pumps and my daughter walked up and said don't be talking to her - I don't want it - EVER!!!! So right now I'm just leaving it at that and hopefully when she gets a little older she will change her mind. Right now to be honest she is embaressed with having diabetes. Whenever I talk to someone about it she tells me to quit talking. I try to tell her it's nothing to be ashamed of. I even show her famous people who have it and other kids her age have it but it doesn't phase her. It's still new to both of us so I know it will just take time.

Hi all, I am 60 yrs old, diag w/diabetes actually in 4/2005 when I was in the hospital for mrsa in the lungs. In the hospital my bs was 145 but that was under very controlled diet so dr was suspicious. then when we were in TN on vaca in sept my bs was 478, so we came home. since then I am on a roller coaster. I try to watch my diet but my very most fav food is potatoes, pasts and fresh baked bread. I rarely have the bread thing anymore unless we go out, I cut way back on the potatoes but the pasta is still a prob. I can have a glass of water and raise my bs 30 points. I have bronchecticis so I go on steroids fairly often which sends my bs to the sky, then my last a1c was 10.3. I tt to the dr about pump, but he said no. I am very curious about Patty's comment. Why would the dr take him off the pump? to punish him??? and why won't my dr put me on it? My ins company recommended that I go on it and I am covered 100% until my husband retires, so what is the down'-side of the pump that I don't know about. I take 80 units of lantis in the am, then 10 to 15 units of humalog with meals plus a sliding scale of humalog if my bs goes 200 or higher. some days I look at that needle and I want to SCREAM!! I am sooo sick to death of the stabbing, not to mention the callouses on my fingers from testing. I just don't understand why he won't put me on the pump. can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Just think how young that baby will stay if you ONLY count as her birthdays all Friday The 13ths! :D
