i went in to our local bloodwork place yesterday. my doctor had faxed an order to take blood for a thyroid test. when i got there and sat down with one of my favorite lady dracula's i mentioned that i needed the thyroid test for a possible gastric bypass. she looked down at the order and said it's not on here. this is an order for your regular a1c test and all that goes with it, but no thyroid. i think i must have looked at her like she had three heads. i had just had my a1c done. (6.6) so had they done that test i would have gotten stuck with the bill. the insurance wouldn't have paid for two in two months. dracula lady (all in fun,all the girl's love it when we call them lady dracula's) then called the doctor's office and they said oops, we sent the wrong one. that one is for january. they then sent the right one. but if i had not been paying attention things would have been very different. a small reminder that we need to be ever vigilant. what if it had been for something more important then blood work? a minor surgery, or something even more important. we all need to keep our eyes open and question anything that doesn't seem right. i just wanted to remind everyone to keep their eyes open. you never know when an honest mistake is going to be made.

Good advice, Deb. Vigilance applies to your insurance company's policies, too. My mother goes to a pain clinic, and on her first visit they asked for an in-house drug screen. We never thought to question it. Her insurance would've paid for it at the usual facilities, but because it was done at the doctor's office we had to shell out almost $1000 after the fact.

Well done, debb!!! And now I'm curious, too, about the fasting question. I always do and was told to do so.......

why not? we were discussing that when i went in for my blood work and they were saying that i might not have needed to for the throid test (come to find out it was a good thing i did, cause it was a fasting one) but for the a1c i would have had to. why the sudden change? i always fast before any blood work anyway cause the first time i don't it will sure as heck be a fasting blood letting.

Good catch! We do need to pay attention. Even doctors and lady draculas are human!
