A Tale of Two (or lack of two) Insulins

Sometimes things just won't go right.
Take yesterday for an example.

Two weeks ago, I started back on MDI and Lantus. It's been going very well, numbers coming down and feeling better since that month of bizarre pump issues. We were working with two bottles of Novolog and a Lantus pen until Tuesday. On Tuesday, after a day of blood sugars just not coming down, we figured out that the Novolog had just expired- no biggie, we ran out to the store to pick up the refill.

We were now down to 1 bottle of Novolog (a back up bottle to be picked up on Thursday) and the Lantus pen (a refill to be picked up also on Thursday).

So last night, we discovered that we were actually out of Lantus. This was at about 9:30. We decided just to get up every few hours and test and correct with Novolog until the refill was ready in the morning. Fine, right?
Nope.

This is when the Novolog bottle shattered on the floor.

My mom spent until midnight on the phone with my Children's Hospital doctor sending an emergency prescription into the closest 24 hour pharmacy (which was about 20 minutes away). When it had finally been sent in, my dad drove out to get it, where he discovered that insurance wouldn't cover it and it'd be $140 for the Novolog and $50 for the Lantus. He spent a long time at the pharamacy, finally coming home (only able to get the Novolog, but it was definitely better than nothing) at nearly 1am.

Ironically, after a few hours of no insulin I went low at around 1:30 just to top it all off! Much better than having a high to me, though. :)

We're picking up the Lantus tonight, and I've somehow remained between 80-140 mg/dl for all of today, but it was a crazy night for sure. I think my parents are pretty awesome though.. they both got up at 6am after all of that and went to work!

From now on, I think we'll keep extra backups in the fridge!
