Ugh. My blood sugar has been crazy lately! I don't know if it's just travelling or what, but on Tuesday night my blood sugar was 21.8 (392) after dinner and on Wednesday it was 24.3 (437)! Wednesday night I ate out so that's my own fault, but still! I was running high almost the entire time, so I put my basal rates up by 0.5 u/hr and that seemed to help on Thursday and Friday.

Last night I got home and was 5.6 (101) before dinner and 10.2 (184) after dinner. I was exhausted so just corrected and went to bed. I tossed and turned for what felt like hours and could not get to sleep.

Then, I'm not sure if I fell asleep and woke up again or just never fell asleep, I got up around 12:30 and felt all numb and weird and tested at 2.3 (41). I ate a bunch of glucose tablets and an All Bran bar and a small glass of "low-carb" juice.

Went back to bed and woke up this morning at 15.6 (281). Those random, really low, middle-of-the-night lows are the one time I have problems with over-treating. Still, given what I ate, 15.6 isn't bad.

I'm working all day today and also tomorrow morning. I'm hoping my blood sugar cooperates better today but the thought of eating hotel food (in my own city, the work event is at a hotel) makes me cringe, and I don't have time to organize bringing my own. It did help a lot having my own food for my trip. Next time I travel will be in a month or two and I'll definitely be doing the same thing.

Yikes 24.3! Have you thought about checking your I:C ratio. If I eat something that I'm not sure about the carb count I tend to check a lot more to try and not go so high.

Hope being back home will help with these issues.

That 24.3 was an hour and a half after eating, usually I try to check every hour or so if I eat out. I splurged and had a "mini" dessert but obviously I was way off on the count! I think my ratios and basal need adjusting (again, just did that last week ...), but it's hard to tell because mine seem to change every week. Now I'm a bit freaked out by that low, so I'll see how this morning goes before adjusting anything. I think getting back to my usual schedule/foods will help a lot.

Yikes is right! I wonder if you've been fighting something? I've had a nasty cold this week, and it's resulted in equally awful blood sugars.

Are you on the pump? When I get low in the middle of the night or at the start of the day, the DR has me turn down my basal rate at nighttime and early morning. I, also, have to watch for over-correction. It's scarey, sure. I forget how many carbs will raise you how many points, but I would ask your endo DR to make sure you get a good handle on things. I think turning down pump rates would make sense if I am low regularly. As far as I can tell, I'm not ... I have more problems with highs, but do have random lows every couple of days. I just got a new endo and saw him for the first time in September. Unfortunately, he had no suggestions for me even after looking at my logs in detail (the appointment was 45 minutes). Every endo and CDE I've seen has been unable to spot any kind of pattern to my readings (which I can't, either) and just tells me to keep doing what I'm doing. I even went on a CGM for a week in 2009 and they couldn't find any patterns.

When I eat at Home I can estimate my Bolas reasonably accurately. When I eat out I use the same estimates times 1.5 or 2. This works for me but you may be different. I also use a Square wave or dual wave delivery as I tend to peak in 2.5-3 hrs after dinner.
