TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

It's been a while since I've read such a great title about diabetes. Certainly no other diabetes book I have reviewed is so well laid out, incorporating compelling visuals in full color to complement the easy-to-understand yet substantial content written by two of the most respected figures in today's diabetes education world, Hope Warshaw and Joy Pape (both of whom are members of TuDiabetes).

The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes has something for everyone: those with type 2 diabetes (the majority of patients living with this chronic condition) as well as those with type 1 diabetes; those who have been recently diagnosed as well as those who've had diabetes for a while (but can use a refresher).

The three sections that make up The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes are proof that the authors know what they are talking about. The 21 chapters constitute a complete reference that touches on diabetes basics (dealt with in section 1, Build Your Strong Foundations), how to manage your diabetes through monitoring, diet, medication and lifestyle changes (covered in section 2, Create Your Real-Life Diabetes Plan) and an advanced section that touches on matters that range from sexuality and traveling with diabetes to health insurance and protecting your rights (discussed in section 3, When Life Happens).

All in all, this constitutes a must-read for all people touched by diabetes.

I can't say enough about one of this book's authors - Joy Pape. I first saw Joy in 2002, after managing my diabetes successfully with diet and exercise. I had a relapse in my weight control, and Joy was there to help me find new ways of managing my disease. She was the first real CDE I saw that really clued me in to being present, aware, and educated in my own disease.
