D-Blog Week 2012: One Thing to Improve

Yesterday we gave ourselves and our loved ones a big pat on the back for one thing we are great at.  Today let’s look at the flip-side.  We probably all have one thing we could try to do better.  Why not make today the day we start working on it.  No judgments, no scolding, just sharing one small thing we can improve so the DOC can cheer us on!

"One thing to improve", oh I could do an entire D-Blog Week's worth of posts about that. We all know that diabetes is a 24/7 work in progress and there's always something to improve.

But today I am supposed to choose only one thing. And although I have many options to consider, the choice is easy: I'd improve my routine. Test routine, meals routine, exercise routine. I'm not saying boring eat-just-oatmeal-for-breakfast-jog-each-morning-at-7 routine. But the kind of routine that brings some constant into your diabetic life. Because yeah, diabetes is the kind of disease that will have you eating same meals, bolus the same number of units, starting with the same fasting blood sugar, and get two totally different post-meal blood sugars. Like 100 mg/dl apart.

I alternate too much between short periods of great control, strict meal planning and carb counting, grueling cardio, then fall completely off the wagon. And once I do that, it is awfully hard to get back into ROUTINE. Because there's no half measure for me: either I test, carb-count, exercise and log on a daily basis or I do none of this and spiral out of control.

So yeah, that's the thing I would improve: my routine. Small changes so that I can stick to them and that can gradually become habits. Habits that will help me figure out a lot of this diabetes stuff.

P.S. Check out the  One Thing to Improve - Wednesday 5/16 Link List.
