Finally Have Done It - Why did it take me so long. HAPPY!

Finally I have taken matters into my own hands.

I am now taking a combination of Humalog for short acting insulin and NPH for long acting insulin.

I am so happy with this combination. I take 10 units of NPH morning and 10 at night. I've never had a low with this basal level. My fasting levels are now in the 80s.

I am guestimating still how to much humalog - and not testing very frequently (fortunately I am very sensitive to going low and can feel it well in advance). So I've started with a ration of 10:1 for breakfast and lunch and 15:1 for dinner. If I don't eat carbs I don't take any. So far my highest detected no. is 126 at 1 hour post eating. I haven't had any lows.

I am so happy with this now. I can eat what and when I want!! So much freedom compared to just using the 70/30.

Don't know what my doctor is going to say when I confess. But I swear I don't want to go back to being forced to eat on a schedule with highs and lows.

Issue is that I am trying to get pregnant again, and my doctor says nothing is safe except the NPH.

I do have some insulin production of my own. So hopefully with this approach I will keep that forever.

Good for you Sally! We know our own bodies better than anyone else. If your endo can't see from your results that you are treating yourself appropriately, maybe it's time for a new one. Great results, you should be proud of yourself.

Way to go! Moms here & elsewhere would disagree with your doctor about NPH being the only safe insulin to use during pregnancy. He's stuck in the dark ages.

In the end, we all have to face the reality. We are ultimately responsible for our own care. If you approach these decisions responsibly and in a fully informed manner, nobody can criticize you. I hope this works out well.

Good for you! I've taken the initiative to change my regimen many times and I have never regretted it. The endos don't live with us and our diabetes 24/7 and sometimes we have to just do what we think is best and adjust as necessary. As I always remind my doc, we both have the same goals in the end - I want to live a long, healthy life which means that I have to avoid extreme highs and lows. And with any regimen, it's the results that speak for yourself. If you're having good numbers, and you feel good, that's what's important.

BTW, I prefer NPH to lantus and levemir. Maybe because it's what I'm used to, but I have always had better results with it.

329,040 minutes, 329,040 moments so dear. 329,040 minutes — How do you measure, measure volunteers? In smileys, in tears shed, in counsel, in cups of coffee. In units, in carb counts, in laughter, in strife. In 329,040 minutes – how …
