Hello out there! Looking for a T1 friend...

Hi Ladies,

This is going to sound like an odd question, but is there anyone out there that lives in the lower mainland of BC (New west, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Vancouver, Surrey)with type 1 diabetes that would like to get in contact with me? I am a 32 year old married woman who has had type 1 for almost 24 years and I have never known of another T1 before. I was at the hospital for a routine check-up the other day and started talking to another girl about my age who also had type 1. Even though we only talked for a couple mins, it made me realize how much I would love to be friends with someone that is going through the same thing as me. I love my husband, friends, and family but it is hard for them to relate to me sometimes and I don't think they'll ever really "get it". I feel like I'm writing a profile for a dating site, lol!

Anyways, if anybody is out there and would like to connect, please let me know!

Thanks :)

Hi Amanda ...try if anyone from the Vancouver Group would like to connect ??? I am thinking of Sandy Struss..I bet googling her name may give you a result . http://www.tudiabetes.org/group/vancouverbctype1s ...I wish you live in Salmon Arm ...there are quite a few of us type oners here , including pumping insulin ...

Hi Amanda: :)

Good idea from Nel.

I'm from Ontario but if you go through this link you should find some Type 1's from BC who live near your area. Many are no longer on this site however.

I actually was thinking one day while looking through this link: "Gee, does everyone from Canada live in BC and Alberta"? LOL! Good Luck!

I'm in New West! There are some Type 1 support groups around Vancouver, which I've attended a few times, but I find support groups don't really fit with me. I find them a bit artificial. I'd rather just do coffee with people! I should try them again, though, as the one I attended before was at VGH and I was in North Vancouver at the time, and I think the long transit commute negatively affected my perceptions of it, too. (I went several years ago, not sure if the group still exists ...)

I'm 31 and have had Type 1 for 21 1/2 years. (I'm also visually impaired, but not from diabetes.) I don't know many people "in person" with Type 1, except those I've met through the support group. I've met one person with Type 1 online who I later met in person. I've also attended the Children With Diabetes conference when it was here in 2010; if it comes again in 2014 I'll probably be going again.
