Yesterday, I received a call from a student pretending to sell magazines to raise money for college. I told him that I was disinterested. Within 30 minutes a man appeared at my door posing as student's sponsor. I didn't open door and immediately telephoned police. Police said solicitors probably simultaneously gathered listing from whitepages.com

Comment by Ronnie Gregory M on December 16, 2010 at 10:40am wow people still sell magazine subscriptions door to door, that's archaic to say the least but pushy telemarketers surely do need to be stopped cold
Comment by mistressbinky on December 16, 2010 at 12:17pm This was a scam. I called school where student said he attended and they had no such student. In addition, schools nolonger solicit magazine or candy sales. Principal said it's against the law and dangerous. A scam artist found young people to make these call with a sob scenario. An hour after the call I receive another call asking for my sibling. I never asked the person what did they want. Then they mentioned an uncle that was deceased before my birth. Google your name on peoplesmart.com, whitepages.com, yahoo.com, google.com, aol.com, and msn.com and delete yourself from directory. In addition, post an alert note to all phones and door just encase this happens to you. Call 911 if solicitor is on your door step, but don't open door. They will claim to know people in your household which they got from the directory. In the 1800s the directory use to list every that was related to you, occupation and address. I found this out when I was conducting historical research for someone.
Wow - thanks for sharing.
Happy Holidays.
